Extracurriculars/ volunteer opportunities and etc that will help me get into UCLA

<p>Hey guys, </p>

<p>Im a student at a CC in southern california. I am trying to transfer to UCLA and major in chemical engineering. I am wondering if any of you have any tips or ideas for volunteer opportunities/ EC's. I havent been up to much the last few weeks because I only have 1 class this semester. This is my first year in CC, so I havent completed any units. I've applied for over 30 jobs, but havent had any luck so far.</p>

<p>Tutor, work study, volunteer at hospital, etc.</p>

<p>Engineering clubs. Show passion. Lots of it.</p>

<p>Major: Psychology
College American River college in sacramento
UC GPA: 3.82 (hopefully 3.84 by the fall of 10’)
Applying to:UCLA, UC Davis
Prereqs: DONE!
IGETC: Will be done by the fall of 10’
TAG/TAP: UC Davis TAG</p>

<p>EC’s:

  1. Volunteer at a adult day care center, helped Alzheimer patients with mental exercises like playing board games, helping them do art work, assisted the physical therapist in leading exercises with patients with all kinds of mental difficiencies, assisted in walking and physical therapy with patients who were basically almost bedridden or wheelchair ridden.
  2. Volunteer at a hospice. Helped families especially if their loved one has passed away from an emotional standpoint. Worked with the patients to help them cope with their lives especially for those who still are in denial that they will eventually pass away.
  3. General and Social Psychology tutor in the summer of 08’. Chemistry tutor during the spring of 09’ led beacon tutoring in an integrated organic/biochem class. Helped out fellow students mentally raise their grades from failing to passing grades.
  4. Filipino club member on campus </p>

<p>Essays: Doing them right now, will state the above ec’s and how it changed my life, how it relates to the major that I am studying for.</p>

<p>@ Pinoiako916 Stop hijacking other people’s threads. This is for OP not you.</p>

<p>And what everyone else said earlier is good =D. As a general guideline, if a club/volunteer position isn’t about your major, then it’s not really helpful as an EC.</p>

<p>Wow, Pinoiako916, way to use this thread as your personal ego party. Get lost. </p>

<p>As mentioned before, find school clubs and connect with professors and their department to expand your EC’s for the application.</p>

<p>Honestly, if your GPA is great and if you can relate passionately about your major in your personal statement, you are pretty much set. Don’t spread yourself thin with too many activities. Work/internship in your field will help.</p>

<p>Im gonna definitely try and get a volunteer job at the local hospital.</p>

<p>as for internships, I heard JPL accepts some college students so I will apply when I get the chance.</p>

<p>Regarding clubs, I talked to my counselor last week. He said to join this honors club called Phi Theta Kappa. Does anyone know how it works? He said its sorta of a back door that can help me stand out amongst other applicants trying to transfer.</p>

<p>Honors clubs aren’t as great as they seem. It’ll just be another footnote, but it will allow you access to exclusive scholarships/benefits so go for it!</p>
