Extracurriculars - What are you involved in?

This thread is for anyone who is currently in college. I'm heading off in the fall, and so are a lot of people here, and I was wondering about what to get involved in, or what I should be on the lookout for as far as activities go. This thread is just to chat about student governments and volunteering (through your college), as well as intermural sports and clubs. What did you like, what didn't you like, what did you wish you had, whatever.

I joined the women's rugby club team and it was the best decision I ever made...its fun and keeps me in shape. I'm also in a few clubs related to my major, which are informative and useful, and all offer me lots of volunteering opportunities as well.

I'm not a big student government fan...theres way too much politics and favoritism involved..but just my opinion

See something odd here..?

What're you majoring in, ND?

Roy, I laughed but I think she meant that it's more of a popularity contest than anything else.

"See something odd here..?"

that government and politics don't mix?

anything know about playing volleyball at vassar? (for women)

My first semester I was big in the video game club, but left when a bunch of stoners took over. I did National Broadcast Socity my second, but had to leave after I changed my major. Last semester I joined the methodist student group, which I'm still in and is really cool, and this semester I got on the campus newspaper.

Absolutely nothing :) . Extracurriculars are fairly irrelevant unless you're applying to medical school or something.

I'm looking to go into law school, but most of the things I'm considering would be just for fun, like boxing club.

I'll be a peer mentor for the honors program next year. Essentially each mentor has a group of 4 or 5 freshmen in the honors program that we help with various things throughout the year.
I'm also in the National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association here on campus, since I'm a communication sciences and disorders major.
And I'm considering a run for hall council next year, because right now our council is terrible.
Yeah, I'm going to be busy

I play club ice hockey. I play and ref intramural sports. I'm an officer in the Student Activities Org. I am a member of Hillel, the Student Recruitment Committee (I'm a tour guide) and the Freshmen Orientation Committee, as well as a fraternity. Yeah, I keep busy.

I work at the library part time, have a paid research project, secretary of a club, serve as a representative on a school board, and homework of course...that should count as an extracurricular!

Varsity track and field, communications majors society, fraternity, and I'm the president of our dorm.

Needless to say, I have no free time, and when I do - I spend it on CC.

I forgot to add that I'm active in honors and work part-time in the journalism Mac lab.

I'm involved in Alpha Phi Omega (service fraternity). My main project is elementary school tutoring, but sometimes I work at campus escort and do other things also. I play sax in the Wind Symphony and Pep Band.

cavalier302, I don't think ECs are irrevelent, they help you enjoy your time at school outside of class =)

If you enjoy your ECs, then by all means, do them. Too many people seem to get involved in things because they're compulsive busy-bodies and future overinvolved PTA parents...

Sports clubs: crew, archery -> dropping crew for sailing next year
work: lab assistant at the biolab

will join a social club next year

"future overinvolved PTA parents"

lol

In four years of college I did the following:

Beta Theta Pi Fraternity 4yrs and beyond. Best decision I could have ever made. Invaluable is the only way to describe it.

College of Arts & Sciences Student Advisory Board 4 yrs (2 terms as Director of External Relations, 1 year as VP)

Arts & Sciences Student Ambassador 3 yrs (talked to high school kids about college on Senior Visit days)

Pre-med Club 2 meetings...wasn't worth it

Greek Ambassadors 3 yrs (President for one) (Talked to HSers about the benefits of joining a fraternity or sorority - there are many)

Humanities in Medicine Club 1yr (dissolved due to lack of interest from me and anyone else)

College of Arts & Sciences Curriculum Committee Student Rep 2 years. Was through the Advisory Board and I got to hang out with professors for 2-3 hours once a month and approve or reject proposals for new classes. Was a lot fun...profs really aren't that different from their students.

Volunteered at local hospital during spring of my junior year and fall of my senior year.

Worked at Old Chicago restaurant as a server.

Teaching Assistant for a Leadership class

I also was selected into the following groups:

Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership Honorary)
Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology Honorary)
Homecoming King Semi-Finalist

Yeah, so I was really busy in undergrad, always rushing off to a meeting or filling out an application or whatever, but looking back I don't think that there is one thing I would change about all the stuff I did (some of the stuff I didn't do...that I wish I could change)
