I wish i really tried harder in my 9th grade. i ended up with a 90.5 first term, and a 93.12 second term on the 100 point scale. I also took a few H.S. courses in 8th grade, Earth Science(88) and Algebra(90), both of which also count towards my final cumulative gpa; i know both these courses were a golden ticket to a free 98 bc middle school was so easy, but i didn't care as much back then. However, this sophmore year, i stepped my game up. Even though i'm still taking all regular courses like in freshmen year (bc ap world is the only ap available to sophs, so i didn't take it), i earned a 97.3 out of 100 this year for 1st term. This 2nd term for soph year will also be a 97 again.

So basically my overall average so far will be a 94.5. I really wish freshmen year grades didn't count because if they didn't, my overall avg would sky rocket to a 97. I'm also taking 3 aps next year. Will colleges really see that i have a positive upward trend in my gpa? when i looked at my transcript grades, all i saw were a bunch of freshmen grades and sophomore grades clumped together in one big boxed category. How can admissions officiers view freshmen grades apart from soph grades? they're all lumped together and i'm concerned because i want them to have a clean cut screen shot of grades from separate years, so that way my trend is conspicuous.

First, that isn’t a bad GPA at all. An A- or A GPA is fantastic! But if you were aiming higher, yes, colleges will like the upward trend.

And don’t worry about how the admissions officers see your grades. They’ve seen thousands of different types of transcripts, I’m sure they’ll be familiar with yours.

haha thanks and all… but i really want to get accepted to cornell. I don’t think my gpa is cornell caliber. I got a 193 on my soph psat this year and i’m going to be taking it again this fall as a junior aiming for a 210.

I know i didn’t detrimentally scar my application with my gpa but is there a chance schools would pay attention to sophmore and junior/senior grades more? I also go to a magnet school, pretty well ranked in the country, if that helps at all. :D

also… there are some classes like Gym and Health. Do colleges count these courses?

There are some colleges like the UCs which do not take your freshman year into account, and you may be interested in looking into them and seeing what other schools have similar policies if this is really concerning you.

Which it shouldn’t. As @SneakyWalrus pointed out, an A- freshman year will not put you out of the running for Cornell. Especially if you do well your Junior year, you will mostly brush over your freshman year. A 94.5 is very respectable and probably calculates on a 4.0 scale to somewhere around a 3.8. You have no reason to be worried. Get off this website with its self-selecting population of competitive overachievers until your junior year - or at least understand that the people on this website are not representative of most high schoolers, and that you are well above average.
