FA Package/Acceptance

Hello,

I'm a transfer '16 student who got off the waitlist to Dartmouth today. Or at least I think. I got my Dartmouth official financial aid package mailed home; congratulations, welcome to dartmouth class of 2017, etc etc look forward to seeing you in the fall. A page with the FA award, signed, dated Jun 12, with my name and transfer status. Only problem - it came in the Class of 2017 folder. I'm a Class of 2016 student. It's clearly official, and has all the FA pages inside. Whole package and all, and on the official financial aid printed page, it says TRANSFER STUDENT under my name, and June 12 as the award date. All very much in order. I suppose this means I'll get the acceptance letter Monday?

I'm not too crazy, and I've been waiting for this for a while, so I just assume that I got in and the 2017 thing (according to an adcom) was probably a mistake or they just didn't have a 201 packet on hand. Curious to see responses (night brings paranoia)

Quick Q, btw - do you get your NetIDs in the acceptance letter? Do you have to activate it?

Basically, what is your question about your financial aid package? You will get a Netid under a separate cover.

Well most fundamentally-
This financial aid package is essentially my acceptance, right?
And thanks for the NetiD answer :)

NO, your acceptance letter will come from the admissions office. Admissions and financial aid operate as 2 totally separate entities.

But it is a welcome package. I don’t suppose Dartmouth creates packages that say congratulations, welcome to the Dartmouth Class of XXXX and mails them unless the student is accepted.

*I meant that the acceptance letter must have been mailed on the same day and will arrive Monday when I said “essentially an acceptance”

It’s very clear that this is only sent to admitted students by the folder and package format of the financial aid. I’m just really paranoid because of my parents’ dumb jokes haha

you will receive 2 packets; one from admissions congratulating you on your admissions (you’ll get a certificate for the class of 2016 and some other stuff), and a packet with your financial aid award. Admissions and financial aid are separate processes admit students and financial aid gives award letters. You are not officially admitted until you hear from admissions.

I understand; so getting one means you’ll get the other, correct? That’s all I was asking. My packet says class of 2017, and the other transfers that I talked to reported getting class of 2017 aid packages and welcome information, so I guess Dartmouth is just using that this year.

And I understand your reasoning, but find it hard to believe that financial aid sends congratulations packages that clearly say that you have been accepted to everyone, and that they don’t only send them to students who also got sent an acceptance letter (not that you said they did).

Thanks for your help, and I can’t wait to get up to hanover :)

^This must have happened. Like I said, I received a full financial aid package for admitted students from the FA office, which is the same as other transfers who got FA mailed in a separate envelope and RD students. No other transfer students received it except accepted students. Postmarked on Thursday, so getting to Maryland on Saturday was rather early, even for priority mail. I figure that admissions was also postmarked Thursday, so Monday it is. Sorry I’m stressing so much, and thank you for your help once more.

Look, first you have to take a breath, exhale and calm down. If you are waiting on the official admissions letter, it will come. You are referring to a 2-year old NYU thread. Keep in mind their whole financial aid process has changed since that posting

Remember; you must meet your student contribution through summer earning (dartmouth will not replace this money if you don’t work)

All monies given in FA over the cost of tuition and books are considered taxable income.

Check your health benefits. If you don’t have what the school considers adequate health insurance, you must purchase the college plan (they will pay half and give you a loan for the other half)

Thanks. I’m not usually like this, it’s just I’ve waited so long for an opportunity to study my major, to join a fraternity, etc. I thought it might be good basis, so I apologize haha.
Indeed, I am waiting on the official letter, I know that wasn’t too clear.

The amount I’m making this summer is a 4x multiple of my student contribution (front office IBD internship, so ~11000), so I suppose that this will reduce my parents contribution and raise my contribution without changing my FA total amount?

Health insurance and everything else is very much in order, we’re fortunate to be stable and doing very well. Thanks so much.

It won’t change your FA aid amount this year, but it will change next years financial aid. I think there is a 6k cushion. anything over that adds to to your EFC (so if you make 11k, your EFC will go up by ~ 2500).

Thanks. Trying to figure out how to withdraw from ND

wait until you have everything in hand and have submitted your intent to enroll and it has been received by the school.

Will do. Thanks for everything. My dad is ecstatic, considering it’s father’s day too haha.
