I'm a bit confused, is there some sort of PIN you need to get in order to fill out FAFSA? If so, what does this PIN even do for you/where is it applicable/what's the point of it?

Yes, both the student and one of the parents must have a PIN in order to electronically sign the FAFSA. I believe the student also needs a PIN to log in to check their SAR and amend. Just self-select a PIN…it only takes a minute!

You (and a parent if you are a dependent student) must each get a PIN. You have to provide your SSN, name, birthdate to get the PIN. The procedure checks that your SSN is valid and that you are a citizen or eligible permanent resident. Then you use the PINs to electronically sign your FAFSA.

Whatever you think of it, you can not do your FAFSA online without having the PINs. You also use your PIN for required loan counseling, master promissory note etc.

You get them here

Okay, I just made one (I’ll have my dad/mom make one later).
Does it matter which parent I choose though? Would it be to my advantage to pick the parent that makes less money?

Also, does anyone know why it’s not letting me log into FAFSA? I keep putting in my email and password and pressing “login” but nothing happens.

I can’t answer your question about why you can’t log in. As for the other question, it doesn’t matter which parent has the PIN, if they’re married and you live with both of them, etc. You still have to include all family income, i.e., everything for both parents.

Clear your cache, close your browser, try again…see this page if that doesn’t work:

Your email and password? FAFSA does not ask for your email and password to statrt a FAFSA. It asks for your name, SSN, and birthdate. Are you using the correct site?
[Home - FAFSA on the Web-Federal Student Aid](http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/index.htm)

Press the start button and it should ask for your SSN, name, birthdate.

Only one parent needs a PIN. Does not matter which one (assuming they are married).

Okay, and are all PINs 4 digits? Just wondering.

Yes, always 4 digits

Okay, and is there any way you can check to see if it’s “right?” My dad recently went to college so he has his, but he wants to check and see if it’s correct.

I understand my daughter and I each have to create a PIN. Is there a need / way to link them? From what I have read, we each will enter our PIN when submitting. Any help would be appreciated

3coolcats, your dad can check his PIN by going to the PIN website & clicking on Request a Duplicate PIN. He will have to enter name, DOB, SSN & then answer a challenge question. After he answers the question correctly, he will be able to display his PIN.

jesusworesandals, there is no way to link the PINs (nor any need to do so). When the FAFSA is submitted, it will first request the student PIN; after that, the parent PIN is requested.
