I have recently immigrated to USA and got my permanent resident card. I am graduate student pursing MS at new york university. I want to apply for fafsa. I don’t have any tax return for the previous year. Will i get financial aid? Any help in the matter will be highly appreciated.
You might get federal financial aid (as a graduate student it would probably be limited to loans only), but with the limited information you have provided it’s difficult to give you a definitive answer.
Thanks belknappoint
what do you wanna know ? please ask? i will tell you
If you do not have tax returns for the prior year, you answer that you did not file. It is likely you will have to confirm that with the IRS through a non-filer’s statement.
Are you looking for FAFSA-based aid for the current academic year? That would be based on income, if any, that you earned in calendar year 2015. Did you have income and did you file tax forms in your home country in 2015 and/or 2016?
no i don’t have any income. I have immigrated to USA last month. No , I haven’t filed any tax return at my home country too. I was student there.
Is there possibility that i will get loan ?
Yes, there is a possibility you will get a loan. You will indicate that you have 0 income. At the graduate level, that rarely is an issue, since federal aid is limited to loans (and possibly work study) at the grad level. The school may have additional forms for financial aid, if they have institutional funds - they may request information about your parents’ income, but you won’t need to provide that for FAFSA.
