Hey guys -
So I am currently living at home with parents, and that is my status on the FASFA. With Spring semester approaching, I was hoping to move out and live in Apartment close to campus.
If I change the status of my living arrangements from Living at Home to Living Off Campus, how will my aid be effected? I realize that living off-campus would require a higher cost of living, so I am hoping that my aid would represent that…
I am at Georgia State if that helps.
Thanks in advance.
Georgia State does not guarantee to meet full need for all,accepted students. While,the cost of attancance might be higher for you as a student who loves off campus, there is NO guarantee you will receive a nickel more of financial,aid. This is especially true for the second term.
Thanks for the quick response @thumper1 . I thought that might be the case. I guess the only thing I can do is talk to my financial aid office advisor about it next week? Anyone else have any other idea/experience on this topic?

What are are you currently getting?
I wouldn’t expect that GSU is going to give you more aid.
@mom2collegekids currently receiving:
Fed. Direct Sub: 3500
Fed. Direct Unsub: 2500
Fed. Pell Grant: 4025.00
per year.
if you are getting $6000 in Direct loans…does this mean you are a sophomore? If so, you could,get an additional $500 in unsubsidized loans for the year.
I wouldn’t expect anything else.
Are you a sophomore? or did you get $500 in Perkins loans?
You’re not going to get any more 'free money". You might get $500 more in loans, but it’s silly to borrow more just to move into an apt. Besides how would you pay the rest of the costs?
It’s not just rent, but there’s utilities, cable, internet, food, etc, to pay for.
I think the unsubbed loans is incorrect since it appears the student got the full subbed loan , leaving only $2000 for the unsubbed. Your COA might increase allowing you to borrow more, but you are already at the max for Stafford loans. Your parents could borrow more on a Plus loan if your COA increases.
You should talk to the financial aid office. Since your already got your award for the year I wouldn’t expect that they will give you anything. You can find out if filing for off campus living will get you anything next year. If they only provide federal aid then you have near the max so there is little more to be gained. When you rent an apartment off campus, you also usually have to pay for it year round, so you will have to come up with summer rent.
@lwu1996
Are you a freshman or a sophomore?
If you are a freshman, your maximum Direct loan is $5500. If you are a sophomore, it is $6500.
How were you anticipating paying for this off campus apartment situation? Do you have money to do so? Will your parents contribute (I’m guessing by your Pell amount that they don’t have a lot of extra income to do so).
Please don’t sign a lease or make any firm plans to move UNLESS you have a way to pay your off campus housing costs without increased financial aid.
