FAFSA & Profile Deadline Question

If a school's financial aid deadline is 2/1, does that mean I need the FAFSA & Profile submitted online by that date, or does that mean the school actually needs to receive the info from the CSS or govt by the date? In other words, if I submit on 2/1, is that actually too late?

I know I need to do the forms ASAP, but I'm having trouble not having all my 2006 tax info yet.

"Deadline" dates are when the form is to be submitted, (online preferably) not received. Colleges accept your "best estimates" in the early going. Try to complete your 1040 by February 28th so colleges can make their final determination for financial aid in March or April. In time for you and your child to make that all important final decision by May 1st...National Deposit Day.
May 1, by the way, is the postmark date, not received.

I seem to remember some schools saying to submit early because it takes Profile about a week to process. That seems to imply the deadline is "received" date. I would double check the school's website... I know Yale states "postmark date" with its financial aid deadline. Yet, when we called in October (I think the 25th or so) asking about sending tax rtns, the woman said to submit the PROFILE that night to make sure it got there in time. My son brought the tax rtn with him for his interview so it would get there in time.

Thanks for your help.

Northwestern has a 2/1 deadline - they say
"complete the FAFSA and the CSS Financial Aid Profile as soon as possible but not later than the deadlines indicated below;" (the date is 2/1) so I am interpreting that to mean I must "submit" them by 2/1.

I am trying to get it done earlier. But all the other schools are 2/15 and I want to wait to get as much correct info as possible so I don't have to update the Profile.
