When a school says that February 1 is the deadline, should we send it a week before since it takes a week to submit the CSS profile? Or do they mean we should actually send it February 1st and that will be okay?

bumpbumpbump

Err on the side of sending early (no harm no foul). If your stuff is ready send it now (sooner the better at least this way if necessary you can confirm that they have received all of your information and let you know if something is missing)

Some schools really stick by their deadlines where applying late could keep you out of the money.

but what if I press the 'submit' button on January 30 and the date that a school recommends is the 1st? Will they get it on time? Or the week delay by CB make by css profile late?

Some of my son's schools have a Mar 1 deadline but when you read closely, the schools say the PROFILE must be done by Feb 15 to make the Mar 1 deadline.

To add to Jerzgrlmom's post....

keep in mind that the college board is just a clearing house for the financial aid information on the CSS profile. The college board simply gathers the information then sends it electronically to the college. I have always looked at deadlines as the dates that the school should have your information. If you FA info is due on feb 1, I do not recommend that you should click the button on jan 31.

Even when filing the FAFSA, it takes about 2-3 days to process the information before it is sent to the colleges.

As I stated in my previous posting, if you are an incoming freshman, it is in your best interest to sit with your parents, err on the side of caution and get you information in before the deadline as at some schools, aid is disbursed on a first come first served basis and you could be left with package that is heavier on loans because all of the free money will have already been disbursed.

This deadline talk is worrisome. We have a 1/6 interest in a (small) Limited Liability Company and have been working like heck to get all the info we need from the other five family member owners, two of whom are not speaking to each other.....complicated by our location nine time zones away from everyone else. We've been burning up the fax machine, express mail is doing great business with us, and if all goes well it will all be done by the weekend, when I will submit CSS and FAFSA online with an eye on the first deadline, Monday, Jan. 15 (Brandeis). That's a holiday so no mail service in our APO facility, but I was planning on sending the Business Farm Supplement from the German PO on Monday thinking a postmark would be good enough for the deadline.
Any suggestions or anyone who has experience with Brandeis FA office to know how they treat the deadline?

your best bet would be to contact brandeis directly to see how they will handle the situation as some schools are very strict about deadlines and being late can literally knock you out of the money.
