fafsa question!

We use 2005 tax forms for the FAFSA right?? My parents and I got into a huge argument because they said it was the 2004 tax forms and that led to them accusing me of robbing their money and all that great **** you get from Asian parents. It even says on my CMU letter that they only consider 2005 tax info, by my parents were like "no one has their 2005 tax forms that early". So which one is it?

You are correct: 2005.

Near the end of Jan 2006 one gets their 2005 W2's. At this time one can fill out ones 2005 tax forms.

Respect your parents.

beprepn

^^ is that a yes for 2005? the problem is my parents think that I should send my forms at Jan 1 2006 12:01 AM or I won't get any money and When I tell them they're wrong. They start yelling at me again. >_<

You CAN complete the FAFSA and submit it January 1, but you will be doing it as a "will file"...meaning you WILL file 2005 tax returns. The amounts you use on the FAFSA BEFORE you complete your 2005 taxes are estimates that can be based on recent pay stubs, bank statements, etc...or on your 2004 taxes if there is not going to be too much difference in the amounts. THEN once your parents have completed their 2005 taxes (which they will need to do as quickly as possible....like February 1), you will go and amend the completed FAFSA with the updated info from your 2005 tax returns. The reality is that finaid is based on your family income for the 2005 year.

do most people usually do it that way or do people wait until they've filled out their 2005?

you have all your paycheck info on last paycheck stub of 2005.
We had to fill out the PROFILE in November- that was a guesstimate- and figures couldn't be corrected later.
For FAFSA we filed january 1st- as we knew that
1# it could be corrected and updated as needed
2# the early bird has the best shot at the worms
3# we wanted to get it over with

I imagine that some people do it that way- some people file on the schools deadline and some wait until they get around to filing their 1040

The best answer to the "when" is to check the finaid application deadlines for the schools. Some are very specific..they WANT that info before the end of January which means you MUST do it as a "will file" and estimate. Some have later deadlines...but not too many do. The most important three words re: finaid applications (and college aps too)...Deadlines, Deadlines, Deadlines. Don't miss them. AND important to note that the deadlines vary wildly from school to school.

Not to worry to much, I called a few of the CMU type of schools, and they definitely did not have the time or personnel to look at fafsa # until Feb- They are still working on getting the money from current enrollees for that term/semester. They also are aware that most people do not get their W2's until near the end of month.

Unless your parents situation has changed much from the previous year, 2004 numbers can work until you can get them corrected with better numbers.

I found that our fafsa was self corrected by $2 by the government on our k's something part. I checked our data and I missed a $2 interest receipt. But then I also filed current Fafsa in Aug 2005 (K a grad senior in college). I hate forms.

I'd take emeraldkity's advice and just take mine as anecdotal.

so the fastest way you can do it is to do the "will file"???? and where on FAFSA.com can i fill out the application/worksheet?? i only see a 2004-2005

Fafsa will not have new forms available( online) until January 1st
however- forms at libraries are available now
and if you have to fill the PROFILE- when complete it has filled out a form for you that corresponds to questions on FAFSA
very handy

Actually Emerald...when I did the FAFSA with DS, the form was available before Jan 1, but could not be filed until Jan 1...isn't that still the case?

UF, the website is fafsa.ed.gov and I do not think the new form is up yet. Does it change much from year to year?

If you want a downloadable copy of 2006-2007 FAFSA: go to

<a href="http://ifap.ed.gov/fafsa/0607FinalFAFSA.html%5B/url%5D">http://ifap.ed.gov/fafsa/0607FinalFAFSA.html</a></p>

If you want a downloadable copy of 2006-2007 FAFSA web worsheet: go to

<a href="http://ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/0607FAFSAWebWksht.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://ifap.ed.gov/dpcletters/attachments/0607FAFSAWebWksht.pdf</a></p>

As I understand it, the difference between the downloads is that although the questions are the same, the questions on the web worksheet follow in the same order as the questions are presented online. Remember, you cant actually file until January 2006, but you can fill one of the above out to get ready

Also, the correct address for FAFSA online is:

<a href="http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/%5B/url%5D">http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/</a>

The first “F” in FAFSA means FREE. Don’t go to FAFSA.com and pay someone.

To clarify myself, only use the above downloadable forms as drafts, don't fill them out and actually mail them in.

Jugulator10, Thank you! I looked, but did not see these forms available at first glance. I assumed that they would not be available online yet.

That does make sense that they would still be available- sorry for confusion- it is DECEMBER after all- I just haven't changed my calendar yet .

EMK, you really can't find them on the fafsa site yet. I am very appreciative Jugulator10!

what's the differance between the first and second link? and is it not official or something? why can't we file that out..it saids 2006-2007
