FAFSA Question

My brother is a junior in college and he told me I don't have to fill out another FAFSA Application because he already did it. Is this true? Can he simply add my name to his application?

No. You each have to do your own FAFSA. You will also need to have your own FAFSA PIN number - apply for that now - but your parent can use the PIN he/she already has.

The FAFSA for 2009-2010 is available January 1st. Make sure you do the 2009-2010 one - the 2008-2009 one will still be available but is the wrong one for schools starting next fall. Submit it as early as possible. You will have to resubmit it every year while you are in college.

My D was accepted to Summer 2009, do we wait until January 1st to fill out FAFSA or do so now?

As Swimcats said…you need to do your own FAFSA. BUT your brother ALSO needs to do one for his senior year financial aid. I hope he knows that.

To the above poster…you need to find out if your college even awards financial aid for summer study. Some do and some do not.

If your school offers aid in the summer, to be honest, I’m not sure which FAFSA you would fill out.

You need to check with your school. At my D’s school the summer session is part of the preceding year (so in this case it would be 2008-2009) so I assumed it was the same for all schools, but a poster on CC once said that at their school summer was part of the following year (in this case 2009-2010). Ask your school to be sure.

Summer session can be either a header or footer … that is, the start of an aid year or the end of an aid year. You have to call to find out. If it’s a footer, your child will get a budget based on the summer term. If Pell eligible, you will receive a semester of Pell if carrying enough credits (school determines status). You will also be eligible for sub loans if you have need & unsub, as well.

If the summer is a header, you will only be eligible for non-loan aid in 2 of the 3 terms for the school year. Also, loan amounts are capped annually; once the annual max is reached, no more is available … so if you use it all in summer & fall, there is no remaining eligibility for winter semester.

Of course, just to confuse things, some schools use a borrower based aid year - they base it on when the student begins & award for 2 of the 3 semesters following the student’s start date. You need to find out how YOUR school does things.

Most schools do not award FWS, SEOG, or institutional grants summer term. Some may, though.

I’m still lost.

I called the school and they said that the financial aid forms for Summer won’t be up until March 2009.

Since summer is not a “normal” term for aid, the school wants you to fill out forms for the term. You need to call again, though, to find out which FAFSA to fill out for summer.

I went to the school’s site and found this but not sure, current year means 2009 FAFSA that I will be filing out in January??

(If you plan to apply for aid for the summer term, also complete the FAFSA for the current year.)

I am willing to bet “current year” is 2008-09. You’ll probably have to do that for summer & 2009-10 for fall.
