hi. i checked this site, fafsa faqs, and even the live chat, but i'm still really confused. i want to send to six additional schools, so went to the make corrections page. it said that if i delete any of the original six schools, they won't send it to them. do i have to wait a couple days until i can change it? i got the SAR report today. i'm not worried tho - the six other schools have deadlines at feb 15 and early march. thanks

Call the schools, make sure they've downloaded the FAFSA. Then you can safely change the schools and resubmit.

Once the SAR has been issued you can do a correction with new schools. You do not have to verify that the colleges have received/downloaded the FAFSA.
Every SAR will remain available, and colleges will be able to download the latest FAFSA which lists them. Each SAR also remains available to you, and can be printed or downloaded in PDF format - so you will be easily able to email or fax an appropriate SAR if a college tells you that they don't have it.

Calmom -

What happens if your SAR is a "will file" and you need to update it? Do you first update it to a final status, have it retransmitted to your first 6 schools, then change to the new 6 schools and have that newer SAR sent to them?? Tx

I don't know what you mean by a "will file".

Yeah-- you need to update with correct info, send and get SA R. Then put the other schools in, and send again.

"Will file" is the status if you don't have your taxes filed at the time you complete the FAFSA.

Here is what you do.

Submit FAFSA -- first 6 colleges
Example: Amherst, Bates, Carleton, Duke, Emory, Furman

Wait for SAR - This will be transaction #01

Go online and select "Make Corrections"

Open transaction #01 - delete all 6 college and add new set.
Example: Grinnell, Harvard, Ithaca, Juniata, Knox, Lehigh

Submit - this will be transaction #02

When you get updated info from your taxes, go back to the FAFSA site.

Select "Make Corrections"

Open transaction #01. This is the original SAR that had colleges A,B,C,D,E,F.
Update the financial information with the final numbers from your tax return.
Submit -- this will be transaction #03

Now, open transaction #02. This is the SAR that had colleges G,H,I,J,K,L. It still has the old numbers. Re-enter the updated financial information with the final numbers from your tax return.

Submit -- this is going to be transaction #04.

(If you have more than 12 colleges, adjust instructions accordingly). It is easier to update numbers than add colleges because of the way the web site is set up. It will be also easier in the long run if each FAFSA has a unique set of colleges and you are consistent about maintaining the same sets -- that way you know that every time you need to make a correction to data, you will be doing it to the same number of FAFSA transactions, and you won't have to worry about keeping track of which colleges have received which FAFSA.

Note to Moderator: This is at least the 6th time I have posted detailed instructions like this on this board. People keep asking the same question. Can you please mark this thread so it remains on top and people can find the instructions?

thanks alot. this specifically met my needs and i think i did it right. afer i got the SAR report, i just changed the forms and stuff. now it's processing again to my other schools. thanks again for the detailed process!

Yeah, thanks calmom! One day, I hope, the FAFSA will put an end to this confusion by lifting the six-school restriction. What, honestly, is the point of that arbitrary barrier?

I have no idea. I just wish that they would redesign the web site to make it less cumbersome to enter in colleges -- it seems to me there could be a single page where you could enter in college codes by hand for all of your colleges, then click "submit" to get a confirmation page that would list all of the colleges, and make changes if needed to individual entries.

So I guess if I were the web designer, I'd have a default page come up that allow for about 8 entries - all entries could be done on one page, and there would be a separate "lookup" function in case you don't know the right code for your college. There would also be an "add more colleges" link that would appear once you filled in first 8 fields, as the only reason for the limitation would be for display purposes -- I'd want the submit button to be visible on the page underneath the entry fields for all the colleges.

Now that I think about it, FAFSA probably has a computer program that is set up to only receive 6 entries - so to get around the 6-college limitation, they probably would have to reprogram their software -- probably a bigger barrier than just making changes to the web site. But there is no reason at all why the web site design can't be improved.

no me gusta! Me molesta!

Edit: The previous post-- "No me gusta... etc." was NOT supposed to be posted here. It was posted there and in the correct thread. I try to delete it and it says invalid link. I have no clue how that happened, and I apologize.
