I submitted the FAFSA using estimates and I plan to correct it when my mom does taxes in late Jan. My parents are divorced and I live with my mom. I received my SAR and it indicates that I am selected for verification. Is this most likely because of the estimates I provided? I have a brother living with me and my mom who is disabled and receives SSI. Will I have to prove that also? I guess I will wait for the college to ask for the info they need, but I was just wondering what I may have to provide for verification?

After taxes are filed and processed by the IRS, be sure to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool on the fafsa site to pull over the tax info from the IRS to your fafsa rather than manually updating it. The DRT will be available in early February. You’ll likely have to either do that or order a tax return transcript and send it to the school(s). The DRT is easier. There may be some forms the school(s) will have you fill out and return to confirm some things about your fafsa.

You will need to wait for the school to contact you - they will tell you what they want. Don’t worry about it. Nothing you did prompted selection for verification - it happens. There are various things you may be asked to provide, or you may just be asked to complete and sign a form (your parent will need to sign, too). Most schools aren’t quite ready yet to start collecting verification info … they are still trying to process the winter semester aid.
