i was the very unfortunate students to get the verification process on my fafsa .I was not required to put in my tax information because my mother is disabled and can not fill taxes. but I did file my taxes because I worked in the summer. i have no idea what to do and i hate that i have to go through this process. its going to take forever. and im so scared. nothing seems to go smooth. i don’t know what to do and when i talked to someone they said to do an appeal process. i have no idea what he was talking about and the college is out of session for a week. so i have no one to contact and i need help understanding what all of this is and how to go about fixing it!! please
Being selected for verification is a very normal process that many students and parents have to do in order to verify the information on the FAFSA. You likely won’t be able to get out of submitting the necessary documents, but wait until next week and contact your school to have them walk you through the process of what tax documents are necessary. Waiting a few days until they open up shouldn’t hurt anything.
Verification is usually very easy. They list the documents they want to see (tax return/transcript, W-2, other sources of income) and you send them in. Doesn’t take forever. Some schools verify every student, or every student receiving federal aid, or 1 out of 3 students.
Look on your financial aid page. There should be a form they want you to complete and send in with the supporting documentation. Call the FA office and they will walk you through it.
Verification is NOT a big deal at all. Wait for your school to contact you and tell you what they need (check your portal as the info could come via email). It could be as simple as you using the DRT for your taxes and filling out a non-filer statement for our mom. There isn’t anything you’re going to need to appeal.
How do you go about filling out a non filer statement for my mom. And will my 200 dollar tax return make a huge impact on the money I get from my Fafsa ?

Typically the non-filer’s statement is issued to you by your school directly. It likely could be found on their website. You can earn up to $6,000 or so without it impacting your family contribution (EFC) so don’t be worried about $200.
The $200 is not income, it is a refund of over withholding anticipated taxes. It is an asset (now) but wasn’t in your account when you filed FAFSA. No issue.
