I had to submit my fafsa 3 times this year back in february due to my parents remembering their wrong social security numbers. First 2 times, I got e-mails from the school and government saying I needed corrections. The last time, I got nothing so I assumed everything worked well. Now it’s august and I just found out that it still needed corrections.
Even if I do fill it out correctly now, is it too late? I go to a school in california. Will I get no aid or federal loans? How else can I pay for college? I’m going to the financial aid office at my school tomorrow so please don’t remind me again.I’m going to the financial aid office at my school tomorrow so please don’t remind me again.I’m going to the financial aid office at my school tomorrow so please don’t remind me again.I’m going to the financial aid office at my school tomorrow so please don’t remind me again.
That is something you will have to check on with your school. You don’t even say what corrections there are, so if you just left out your middle initial you should be okay. Try to be careful filling things out next year. Did you already have an award letter from your school? Maybe you will be okay then. You will definately get any Pell you are eligible for and any student loan you are eligible for, but it might be delayed in coming.
Are your parents native born citizens? Some immigrants have social security numbers that look like regular SS#s but will be flagged if they submit them for work or taxes. It’s odd that anyone would give their wrong SS#. I guess you can only do your best and hope the aid comes through.
What are the corrections that now need to be made?
Only the SS’s need to be corrected. My parents were born out of the U.S. They gave out the right ones the year before and the year after but I think old age or something hit them this year and they mixed up numbers. I also confirmed that the SS’s for the application this year were different from that from last year.
Did you verify your FAFSA with DRT?
If you don’t get the aid you need, you’re going to have to ask your school if you can take a year of absence so that yor aid will be right next year. If you have to do this, then you can NOT take ANY classes anywhere else. Not at a CC or anywhere.
Are you going to a UC or CSU? or where?
BTW…when you fill out FAFSA each year, you should not need to put in all the info again. When you open FAFSA, you should be able to have all that basic info populate into the fields …like names, SSN, etc,
Only your school’s financial aid office can answer your questions. Only your school’s financial aid office can answer your questions. Only your school’s financial aid office can answer your questions. Only your school’s financial aid office can answer your questions.
If you did not verify your FAFSA after filing tax, the school may put your FA on hold until verification perhaps by other means. If you did use the DRT, then your error in SSN would have been caught as it cannot be verified. Go back to FAFSA and try the DRT today.
Spam.
Fafsa usually has most of the information the same from previous year’s forms but they always ask me to input the SS of my parents each time.
And I hate to say this but it appears you blew that.
You entered the wrong SSNs. Twice. You haven’t lost the aid, but it is delayed and if there were any extra funds from SEOG or Work Study, those funds might be distributed already.
I screwed up on the FSA ID and my DDs aid was delayed. It is a pain to have to deal with fixing the mistakes and following up.
Since you go to a UC, it sounds like the risk is your Cal Grant. You need to find out if you can still get your Cal Grant and, if not, then will your UC make that up. If not, you’ll need to ask for a year of absence and not take any classes.
In the meantime, print out a CORRECT copy of FAFSA, so that you’ll have the correct SSNs the next time you fill these out.
Hi mom2collegekids,
I got notification today that my cal grant was renewed for this school year. I also called the financial aid office and they said that my aid would most likely remain untouched as I submitted the initial fafsa in February and that it wasn’t my fault that there were no indications that something was wrong. So mostly good news.
Also, the correct copy of the Student aid report in the FAFSA traditionally x’s out the first 5 digits of the social security number. Would you recommend I still keep a copy of my parents’ SSNs? This will be my last year of undergrad and my parents heavily rely on social security to maintain their living and I’m scared that someone can take advantage of the program if they get ahold of that knowledge.
This is your senior year? If so, then you won’t be filing again with your parents numbers.
“Would you recommend I still keep a copy of my parents’ SSNs?”
Yes. There will be times in the future when it will be useful (or even absolutely necessary) for you to know your parents’ SSNs, and you might not want to have to dig through their personal files in order to get that information. Think of a good way to save that information in a place where you can find it, but no one else would be likely to know what that string of numbers means. I save a lot of numbers that I need to hang onto as if they were phone numbers or street addresses. For example:
123-4567 ext. 89
or
12 34th Street - zip 56789
