Hey does anyone know how attending a service academy will affect your FASFA? I was also wondering if you recieved a scholarship and they wrote the check to your college if West Point would reimberse you the same amout or if you just have to reject the scholarship or what? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks,

It depends on the terms of the scholarship. Scholarships earned by cadets that provide funds that are not specifically limited to tuition, room and board can be deposited into the cadet's account at the academy. The cadet account is the internal accounting mechanism used by the academies to credit cadets with their money pay (about $800) and to assess charges for a myriad of expenses including uniforms, books, haircuts and computer. Money left over in the cadet's account ultimately becomes the cadet's money. Unfortunately, most scholarships earmarked for tuition cannot be deposited with the academies. I suggest you check with the academy's admissions department before assuming the scholarship cannot be used.

Our son received a $5000/yr scholarship from my employer. In the acceptance contract for the scholarship it spells out that if the recipient attends one of the US service academies, the scholarship will be forfeited. It also says that if he gets a free ride for tuition at any university, he forfeits the scholarship. Another scholarship that he received from our credit union ($1000/yr) doesn't say anything about service academies, and he is still going to get the money.. I guess each scholarship source is different.
