failed a class

I am a freshman going into my spring semester at UW Madison. I failed my math class which has made me deeply distraught. Not only about getting into my major, but mostly because of whether I completely shot my chances at getting into med school. It was math 171, which is an intro to calc class. My adviser for my major (Biomedical Engineering) told me that the grade I received in math 171 is not calculated into my STEM GPA which will be looked at when I apply to my major.

At Madison, they will allow me to retake the class and both the F and the grade I receive when I retake it will both appear on my transcript. With all this said, have I killed my chances at getting into med school?

A little background info on myself: I am participating in research as a freshman and I will continue being active in some form of research all four years, I also volunteer at the hospital, and I am on a dance team on Madison, as well as a board member of a cultural student org on campus. All of these things as well as study hard for my MCAT score and turn my GPA around are things that I am passionate about. With that said, will that F completely destroy my chances at medical school?

An F will not completely destroy your chances at medical school, but it leaves you a lot less room for future error. I highly encourage you to carefully examine the reasons you earned an F, so you can avoid making those same mistakes again.

thank you very much for sharing your advice! I truly appreciate it and i am definitely examining the reasons I earned that grade! Thanks again :)
