I received my AP Calculus AB score today expecting at least a 3, but instead ended up with a 2. I still can’t wrap my head around that fact that I had a 97% average in the class (my teacher was very easy) but managed to fail the AP exam. I had studied at least a month in advance for the AP exam and figured that the lowest score I’d get would be a 3. I was pretty confident with the multiple choice section and some of the free response questions. Despite doing many review packets and flipping through AP study guides at night, I guess shiet does happen. Should I still consider taking Calculus BC next year? I’m an upcoming junior.
P.S. I feel like an idiot. Not all Asians are smart…
Why wouldn’t you take BC? Neither AP calc was offered at my HS, but it sounds like BC is partly review of Calc I and partly Calc II stuff. A second pass at the material sounds like a definite plus to me.
Besides, you are at least two years ahead of the average student in math. That’s a pretty sizable jump. I’d imagine the number of sophomores getting 5s is far smaller. Don’t worry about it!
Don’t feel bad, you did your best and you’re still ahead of the math sequence by at least a couple of years. I’d say take BC and restudy the AB material right before the exam and you’ll be fine.
I agree with everyone here; don’t feel bad! The very fact you’re in Calc AB as a sophomore is awesome, but it does leave you at a bit of a disadvantage when it comes time for tests like these. You can always omit the score from any fields and give yourself more time to prep for Calc BC, which has an AB component built into the test. You’re gonna be fine, I know you’ll pass next year!
If it makes you feel better, I had a friend who studied like crazy for that test and got a 1. And yes, she too was Asian.
My friend (Asian) got a 1 on the AB test AND like a 1500 on the SAT. It DID NOT ruin his high school career. He just graduated near the top of his class and is attending University of Washington with FULL RIDE.
Point is, don’t focus so much on test scores! Make sure you do lots of volunteering (said friend had more than a thousand hours) and find something you are passionate about.
I would take Calc BC. Don’t be too hard on yourself! Testing is hard for some people (myself included). Some people get A+'s in AP Classes and completely bomb the exams with scores of 1’s. Don’t stress too much. My advice for you is to review what you did wrong when the answers come out and take Calc BC. If you understand the AB topics then you should be fine. Some BC classes go more in depth with review of AB topics, but it really depends on the teacher. Don’t be hard on yourself! Your grade in the class proves how amazing you are as a student!
The BC exam gives AB credit, so just take the class and study hard.
