Yo guys
So I graduated high school in 07 with impressive test scores, grades, extracurriculars, etc. I got into Boston College, which I thought was my dream school and went there.. but failed out after a year. I hated it there, was unmotivated, and pretty much don't have a very good excuse for why I sucked.
I came home to CA and went to a local CC for a year - got a 3.9 this year and have one year left until I am hopefully on my way elsewhere. My question is where would I realistically be able to apply to (since now is the time to think about that sort of thing)? Let's say I get a GPA as good as the one this year next year - overall my GPA would still be either under a 3.0 or barely a 3.0 including my failed classes from BC (I got 2 B's and 1 C and the rest were F's)
I want to study psychology. I will have completed all of my prerequisites and required classes, etc. by the end of next year. I work about 20 hours a week and volunteer on weekends.
Any feedback would be helpful, please no bashing comments about how I blew off a year of college, etc. I have turned myself around and am proud of it. No need to hate.

I would say apply to a Cal State. Go there for under grad and then if you want shoot for the stars with graduate school. As you probably know there are plenty of good Cal State schools

i think you could get into a pretty good school actually… i mean, if you keep a 3.9 this next year aswell, that should be proof enough that youve turned yourself around, getting a 3.9 for a full year…

id say, apply for a few UC’s… like SB, SD, maybe LA… and the others if you want ofc
then maybe look at a few privates OOS, or maybe USC sure a lot of school have averages of like 3.5+ etc… but that doesnt mean you cant get in with less… itll be an uphill battle, but you really dont have anything to lose, except a few application fees… a lot of ppl in very good schools have had a bad year or even a bad full hs record…

i mean like you said, you had good stuff in HS, and then BC you sucked(sorry), and then CC you got back to being awesome… so i think admissions ppl will be able to see it wasnt anything wrong with you, but just your fit with BC

good luck!

Admissions people pay mind to upward trends. Definitely apply to Berkeley, USC, UCLA, UCSD, and whatever OOS schools located where you’d like to be. Give it a try – I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

To be honest I don’t know the OP’s story, but I think it would be foolish for them to apply to schoos like Berkley and USC after the struggles their freshman year. Did they do bad just because it was far from home and they were miserable or did they do bad because of the tough curriculum at Boston College? I mean either way I’m not sure if the OP should thrust themselves back into a highly competitive environment so fast like the other two posters suggested.

Thats why I suggest a Cal State to get comfortable once again with the 4 year university life, save money, and prepare for Graduate school. Then you will be more prepared for Graduate school and honestly your masters is the biggie. Also with a Cal State chances are you can be within a couple hours of home which is good for a support system.

I mean I dont want to sound harsh, but I think it is better to be safe than sorry.

the fact is, from high school u went to Boston College, so your high school stats are appealing, though u failed out your 1rst year, u managed to pick yourself back up,

dude u can do it
