Failing class

I have always maintained good grades, in fact my weighted GPA is 4.02. I have all 90’s and up (which are A’s) except for my precalc grade, which is an F. It’s been low all semester and now that I’m quickly approaching the end of the year I’m anxious. I’m a senior this year and I don’t know what will happen if I fail this class. Will I graduate? Will my college admission offers be rescinded?

I beieve Algebra II is the highest required HS MATH class, so I doubt it failing pre-cal would have any effect on your graduation. With that said, I highly recommend that you talk to your councelor asap.

The only issue is that my councelor won’t help. She’ll recommend me to peer tutoring. But I AM a peer tutor and I can say they don’t help anyone.

If you’re not going to try what your counselor recommends, I don’t know what anyone here can do for you. Fwiw, both my kids and I (many years ago) have been counselors and have been effective at doing it. I strongly suggest giving it a try, along with various online resources for the subjects you are studying

The answer regarding graduation should be an easy one for your counselor. I’d ask this specific question again. Our school district requires 4 math credits, not a specific course level. So failing AP Calc BC senior year would be a problem, for example. If nothing else, check your student handbook or search online for “school name graduation requirements.”

Grades below a C- are an issue for many schools and may lead to an admissions offer being rescinded. Once you have the details and a plan to address it, write to them (hint: don’t tell them you’re not going to try tutoring because when you do it it doesn’t help). Surprising them at the end of the year would be worse.

Can you hire a professional tutor?

Have you asked your math teacher about ways to increase your math grade? Since it’s so late in the year, it’s possible that nothing you do can help you grade. In our school, the third Marking Period ends in a week, so your grade for the quarter would pretty much set, and depending on how low your grades are, it’s possible that nothing you do next quarter will bring it by more than a letter grade. However, if you can bring your grade up, see if your teacher provides extra help outside of class. If that isn’t helpful, you could try also try using online tutorials to help, or hiring a tutor.

As for being able to graduate, that depends on your school. Some schools require 4 years of math or a certain number of credits you need to have earned, so if your school has something like that, you won’t be able to graduate. Otherwise, you should be able to graduate even without the course. However, I’ve heard that many colleges rescind offers if seniors don’t maintain a certain average in their courses, so failing the course may result in your college acceptance being rescinded even if you do graduate.
