failing precalc in senior year

I have been admitted into a state college my major in interior designing and this is my last year in high school, the rest of my grades are A and B except this class. my teacher is not providing help I have an f in the class right now and the class average, in general, is a D I had a D last semester and I’m only 1 or 2 % away from not having an F please help what can I do with this teacher and how can i seek help I contacted the college and they said i need to have a GPA of 3.0

Can we change the focus from the teacher to you?

What steps have you done to improve your grade? Have you gone to extra help? Are you religious about doing the homework, and doing it carefully? Are you an active participant in class? Do you ask questions and volunteer answers? Have you memorized all the formulas? Are you comfortable with the graphing calculator? Do you show all the work on every single problem?

There’s nothing you can do about the teacher; the only thing you can control is the points you earn on every single assessment.

If you’re not having any luck understanding your teacher, have you sought help from other teachers in the department?

Go talk to the teacher and your counselor. Tell them both what is on the line and that you have to pass. Don’t blame the teacher in the slightest way. Instead talk about how you are trying very hard and you hope there is some extra credit or tutoring/test prep that can be done to get you into college.

Counselor/Administrator here:

Please be reminded that if OP knows that s/he has to pass, then OP needs to earn a passing grade. In my neck of the woods there are 33 instructional days left until the end of the year. Op knows or should have known what s/he has on the line and is ultimately responsible for making it happen. If the student is not passing, the ownership starts with him/her to have a paradigm shift. I totally agree with @bjkmom (who is also an educator).

Op should not expect a passing grade because they need a 3.0, if they have not put in the work, especially when the student has been struggling with the course all year and has not indicated that s/he has done anything to improve his/her grade.

I do not advocate for nor do i expect any teacher to give a student extra credit. Unless the entire class has the same opportunity for extra credit and will get the same boost, extra credit is essentially rewarding people for not doing what they should have done the first time.If you are doing what you are suppose to do, then you will not need extra credit.

IMHO, it is a slap in the face to the student who works hard, does their best work and does everything right and lives with the grade that is reflective of the work that they have done (good or bad).

What you are currently doing ISN’T WORKING. DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

So you need to change what you do.
Get a tutor. Ask any math teacher at your school for a recommendation.
Watch Khan Academy videos.
Get a problem book for precalc off Amazon and do extra problems.

You are in danger of being rescinded by your college. It sounds like you have struggled all year with this class. What have you done to get help? Do you have a tutor? It’s very late in the game but if your final is worth enough, maybe you can earn your way back to a C.

I totally agree with the posters who said that this is not about your teacher, this is about you and not earning your grade.

Can you speak to your college about the option of perhaps retaking the course over the summer?

We are not saying your teacher is good…they may be terrible. Grades are not punishment, they represent what you know. If you have a D or an F, that tell the college
either “@kwelson understand the material” or “@kwelson does not understand the material.”

How can you get it so you understand the material? Get a teacher that will help you. These are called tutors.

Agree, you will have bad teachers/professors now and again throughout your life (just as you will have bad bosses). Sitting around and blaming others is a path to continued failure. Right now you are at risk for having your college acceptance rescinded. Figure out what to do. A D last semester should have spurred you to take some action – so now you have a lot of catch up work to do. Here are some things to consider:
Are you doing the homework consistently/thoroughly every night?
Do you read the textbook and do every example in the chapter?
Do you review old homework/exams and figure out where you made your errors?
Have you looked into hiring a tutor?
If a private tutor is not an option, have you gone to your school honor society and asked if you can get a free tutor?
Have you spoke to other math teachers at your HS about ways to get help?
Have you utilized online resources (ex. Khan academy)?
