Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

nope, I'm just crossing my fingers ;]

u penn - art and archaeology of mediterranean - phd - accepted (full ride + 20k annual)
indiana - history of art - phd - accepted (+ unknown funding)
toronto - history of art - phd - accepted (full ride + 15k annual)
princeton - art and archaeology - phd - n/a
yale - history of art - phd - n/a
jhu - history of art - phd - n/a
u texas austin - history of art - phd - n/a

how does $20k sound in the grand scheme of graduate humanities stipends? i think this is pretty good, but whats the ballpark look like anyways?

The thing is I am doing my undergrad in the US. They say in their website that I need English proficiency test only if I am not a native speaker and if I don't go to college in the US.
So, I just wrote back to them and told them that I shouldn't need to show proof of that test.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Don't worry, it will be just fine. Somehow they got confused.

Info on me: Math major @ Cal Poly SLO
GRE: 770Q 690V 4.5 AW
GPA: 3.78/3.9 General/Major
Two years summer REU research

I will second (or third) the opinion that OSU makes a general effort to make a very early impression - was given paid visit in early Jan

Good to know I got rejected :)

Hi guys. So far I've gotten pretty lucky with my responses. Here's the list (CompSci PhD in all cases):
Accepted:
Brown U, Stanford U, U Washington, Harvard, Princeton

Waiting:
Carnegie Mellon (my top choice), MIT,
Columbia, Berkeley,
Chicago, U Wisconsin, U Penn

MS programs:
U Waterloo (Accepted), U Toronto (Waiting, paid visit).

My brief info:
International student from Taiwan, attending U Waterloo in Canada.
Average: 95%
GRE: 800Q 700V 4.5AW 810CS
One summer NSERC research. Two coauthered journal papers submitted.

JYEK, nice. the only CS program i've heard back from is ucla (master's). my other schools are all for phd, including brown. when did you hear from them? it's funny, with brown, my application was vague/contradicting as to which program i was applying... they sent me 2 emails over a month ago, asking me which one i'm aiming for. haven't heard back.

oh, and you got 810CS??? how is that possible? i thought it was max of 800. it's funny:
you got 700V and 4.5W. i got only 470V but 5.5W. lol.

Hey ct. I heard from them over the past week. I'm sorry about all the trouble with Brown. I hope you get in.

Okay I checked my score report and the max is 900 for CS (I think for all subject tests, but I am not sure). And actually I had a 850 instead of the 810 I said before. Most schools don't require the subject tests though so I don't think they emphasize it much.

Heh, about the AW section, yea I've always sucked at writing tests. When I came into U Waterloo we had to do a writing test (the dreaded ELPE). I exactly made the lowest mark required to continue on with my program :-)

hey JYEK - kinda cool, i'm a graduate of UW (optometry 2004). are u a part of TWSA? i was the prez back in the day. i'm currently in taiwan now.

anyhoos - my applications: (vision science)

Waterloo: Waiting
Berkeley: Interview (i think paid)

btw folks - can anyone decipher the text below - it was the interview invite via email:

The Admissions Committee recently met to review applications. In the Committee's view, your application is outstanding, so we have decided to invite you for an interview.

--> is this a generic letter? i have to say that after seeing how active this thread was, and how everyone was hearing stuff, i was starting to get nervous (like, could they really reject me???) - so when i got the email, i was elated! but - is it generic language? do u think they'll basically tell all their interviewees that they are basically outstanding as a recruitment tactic?

for financial reasons, it will be very difficult for me to go to berkeley, so i'd like to know how strongly they actually consider me, cause it will influence my decision to go there.

update: i was just accepted to MIT bio.

Got accepted to Steinhardt school of Education at NYU, still awaiting response from two other schools.

Brief profile;

Overall GPA: 3.54

Major GPA (biology): 3.90

GRE: the first one pretty good, the second time I took it not what I excepted.

Experience living in China and Vietnam.

updated list

:D

congrats to all you stud-muffins who have been granted admissions to top schools like MIT, stanford, UC-Berkley etc. :D
i feel like an underachiever posting in the same thread as you guys :/

It's all right, soccerbud. Those schools aren't for everyone. The only Ivy I even considered applying to was Yale, but I decided to save my $125 (my average cost per application! yikes), since there was pretty much no chance that they'd accept me. The rest of the people who post here haven't even heard of 2/3rds of the schools I'm applying to.

updated:

Berkeley - Mat Sci - accepted
Caltech - Mech Eng - paid visit
Northwestern - Mat Sci - accepted
Brown - Mechanics of Solids - accepted
MIT - Mat Sci - accepted
Stanford - Mat Sci - accepted
*UCSB - Mat Sci - accepted

7/7 at the top 10 schools in the country. Wow.

Congrats.

Dirt McGirt, with that wonderful decision to make, where do you want to go?

To quote Darth Vader, "Impressive. Very Impressive."

Very well deserved, too, I am sure. Congrats to both of you -eastcoast and Dirt.

school - field - program - status:

Johns Hopkins - Biomedical Engineering - master's - accepted!!

They are all good schools, so at this point it depends on the advisor and the potential projects. I think that stuff is the most important anyways.
