Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

[quote]
Does MIT accept anyone, for anything whatsoever? I swear that place admits ghosts, because no real, in the flesh applicants seem to be getting in...

There are a few active posters here who were admitted to MIT for grad school. For example, molliebatmit was admitted into the MIT PhD program for bio.

I applied to:

UWashington-Seattle - CS PhD - Rejected
UC Riverside - CS PhD - Rejected
Columbia - CS PhD - Rejected
GaTech - CS PhD - Accepted (19.5K/year TA; still waiting for invitation to grad visit)
UNC-Chapel Hill - CS PhD - Accepted (25K/year TA)
U of Toronto - CS PhD - Accepted (25K/year RA+TA)
USC - CS PhD - They are still reviewing my file
UCLA - CS PhD - They will start reviewing my file sometime next week
UCSD - CS PhD - They will send me their decision by 11 Mar (hopefully)
UMD-College Park - CS PhD - I am in their hold file (or something like that)
UCSB - CS PhD - I am still in the running, but they can't tell now whether I will be accepted or rejected

Right now I have a 50% success rate. Not so happy about it.

Hello Irishbrigade,

Rejected at Harvard. No word yet from Notre Dame.

Sakky & Dirt McGirt, I agree to what you are saying. That was just my perspective, someone who does not really have that choice, and to be offered that precious admission and not being able to go, it is rather disappointing, at least to me. I have been consoling myself by saying that may be Stanford has too much of cutthroat competition for me to be happy:-) But I will be give Stanford the benefit of doubt.

Northwestern, PhD, Communication--Rejected

Penn, PhD, Communication--Rejected

University of Illinois-Chicago, PhD, Communication--Accepted w/ full funding

NYU, PhD, Communication--Pending (assuming rejection)

Update:

Pittsburgh - rejected
UMass - accepted (funding decisions coming later)
Tufts - accepted with funding
Boston College - waiting
Boston University - waiting
Temple - waiting
Georgetown - waiting

UWashington-Seattle - CS PhD - Rejected
UC Riverside - CS PhD - Rejected
Columbia - CS PhD - Rejected
GaTech - CS PhD - Accepted
UNC-Chapel Hill - CS PhD - Accepted
U of Toronto - CS PhD - Accepted
USC - CS PhD - waiting
UCLA - CS PhD - waiting
UCSD - CS PhD - waiting
UMD-College Park - CS PhD - waiting
UCSB - CS PhD - latest reject (I wonder what's their criteria for admitting; anyone?)

Success rate: 42% :(

A 42% success rate for PhD applications is ballin'! Just think of the guy with a 0% success rate!

sdf--

You have some amazing choices. You should be proud!

I had a 25% success rate, and I know people with 0%.

Finally! Not only do I have some results, but have figured out the order of my list.

MICA - MFA Graphic Design: waiting
UW - MFA Visual Communications Design: interview
CCA - MFA Design: waiting (but a little birdie told me that they were mailing out responses today, so should have news soon)
Pratt - MS Communications Design: waiting
**SCAD - MFA Graphic Design: accepted + 10k fellowship
RIT - MFA Graphic Design: waiting

Tufts Fletcher, MALD - Accepted ED, no word on funding

Very happy to get accepted to both my top schools. Fingers crossed waiting to hear about funding.

Hey Anton - are you going to the SAIS admit day on 4/11? I might see you there.

For me:

SAIS, MA - in, funding info to follow
Elliott, MA in Intl Dev - in, about $14K funding/year
SIPA - waitlist (boooooooooooooooooooooo)

Still waiting on American U., but it's a moot point at this stage.

for pure math PhD:

Accepted:
UIC - TAship (unknown $$ amount)
UC Davis - $15k TAship
Vanderbilt - $19k TAship

Still waiting:

both Austin and UCSB have made their first round picks, but not rejections yet

Anyone else at Cornell this weekend?

Accepted:
-UT Austin - MA, Public Affairs
-Georgetown - MSFS

Still Waiting:
-Fletcher - MALD
-JHU SAIS - MA
-McGill University - MA, Poli. Sci.

Waitlisted:
-Columbia, SIPA - MIA

so supposedly stanford was suppose to annouce their results today, but i have yet to hear from them, leading me to wonder if i am waitlisted. kind of a bummer really, as it is my top choice, but i'm feeling fine, surprisingly . the people interviewing there were the creme of the crop anyway, and they interviewed 3 times the number of people they had slots for...

*ucsd/burnham- rejected (kind of surprising)
michigan PIBS- rejected
harvard BBS- rejected
mit biology- rejected
*stanford- interviewed last weekend, waiting (probably waitlisted/rejected)
*upenn-accepted (?)
baylor- accepted
wisconsin- accepted

i'm really lost as to deciding which school i should attend for the next 5+ years. it's frightening...

Volscio,

Why McGill? They have a fairly poor Political Science program are not at all comparable to any of the other schools on your list. McGill Political Science might not even be Top Ten in Canada...

My girlfriend lives in Montreal.

Volscio,

That explains it! Honestly though, I live in Montreal and I didn't even apply to McGill for my undergrad because I was in Political Science. McGill is a school with world class Medical/Law/Neuroscience programs and pretty mediocre prgorams in every other field.

You should have checked out Concordia. It's basically like a City College, right in downtown, but they have a great Graduate program in Public Policy/Punlic Admin. Its a two year program where you spend your second year as a paid intern in Ottawa. I was told that 90% of Concordia's grad students get their contracts renewed after grad school, so its basically like a guaranteed job in Public Policy/Administration straight out of University.

Well, got the status on the final school I was waiting for so here's the run down of all schools. All for Masters degrees in TESOL/Applied Ling

Pitt-accepted-full ride + $17k stipend
Indiana-accepted-finaid unknown at this point...should find out asap....IF I get what I applied for, it would be a smaller stipend ($10k) but also a full ride. Still waiting....cost of living is much lower in Bloomington than in Pittsburgh and I LOVED it hen I visited....actually, it's my favorite at this point so I hope the funding goes through..though I will probably need to take out a small additional loan, but not that much.
Penn State-accepted-no info on funding yet
Illinois-Chicago-accepted-no info on funding
PennGSE-accepted-no funding info
TC@Columbia-accepted-no funding info

Top choice after a campus visit is actually Indiana. I'm here now actually but I fly back home tomorrow. Absolutely LOVED it...hope they give me the money! I really like it here a lot. I actually LOVED Penn too, but I may consider them later for a PhD should I get one, because that's fully funded and I loved it there too.

I liked Columbia a lot, but after visiting I don't think it would be the place for me. I wouldn't mind maybe teaching in NYC or something, but I didn't feel the same level of comfort that I felt with Penn and Indiana and Pitt.

I unfortunately could not visit Penn State and Illinois...and still can't for $$ reasons (they also do not pay for master student visits and I have no left over funds to do it). But I must say after corresponding with some people from Illinois-Chicago, I know it's not the place for me. I think the city would suit me well, but not the department and several of the students I spoke with gave me a bad impression.

Penn State has a great program and I may reconsider them should I persue a PhD, but I prefer the academic options both academically and culturally of Indiana, Pitt, and Penn.

So basically, for financial reasons, Penn is out, unfortunately....I really loved that place and would have lovede to go there but I can't go into that much debt for a masters....Pitt is in because of funding. Indiana will be in if they offer me the funding I applied for....I should know soon....and TC is out due to money and ambiance, Illinois is out due to bad vibes and correspondence and lack of the kinds of options I want at my fingertips, and Penn State is out for the masters only because compared to my other top choices, it doesn't have as many of the things that I want to expose myself to.....

Anyway, that's my long winded rundown and hopefully I will know about funding soon!!!! Good luck to everyone else....I didn't apply to any more schools so besides waiting on funding info from a few places, that's it for me!
