Fall 07: Acceptances/Rejections

I applied to EE for the following institutes:

Stanford -EE - PhD - waiting (probably rejected)
Berkeley - EE - MS - rejected
UCLA - EE - MS - rejected
UCSB - EE - PhD - waiting (invited for recruit weekend)
UCSD - EE - PhD - waiting
UCD - EE - MS - accepted
Minnesota - EE - PhD - accepted

Profile:
Overall: 3.53
Major: 3.6
Last 2 year: 3.67
GRE: 800 460 4.5
Letters: 2 from very distinguished IEEE fellows, 1 from sr. director from work with phd in ME
Experience: 1 summer working for dept at school, 1 summer intern in industry, currently working with prof in lab

I really was hoping to be accepted by LA or SD, but now I'm starting to get extremely worried. Is my my profile just that bad comparing to other applicants? :(

Sig, youre applying for PhD's which means that you can realistically have a 3.95, awesome LOR's and great research and still get rejected. Be stoked you got accepted anywhere for a PhD!

Sig,
I cant understand being rejected for PhD's, but the rejection from UCLA MS was kind of surprising to me. Is it that hard to get into the MS program at LA?

It is a top 15 program in its field...

Yea I was hit pretty hard by it too. I mean I know my profile isnt exactly stellar, but I thought it was decent enough to get me into the MS program. I talked to man graduate students as well as my professor who has been on the graduate admission committee (I think my school is within top 20), and my replies were all very positive about getting into UCLA. I was very discouraged by the reply...I was hoping to get some opinions from this forum, do you guys recommend me emailing a few professors at UCLA in my concentration to ask about what happened? Thanks guys, I was really appreciate it

I dont think you would gain anything by mailing professors, but I do find it really odd. I think it is just bad luck. UCLA generally shouldn't be rejecting 3.53s from top 20s for MS.

The average successful engineering MS student at UCLA has a 3.7. That may have been a factor...who knows.

Except, of course, if the average MS admit was higher than that...

UCLA application actually only asked for last 2 year GPA, and the site says average admittance is 3.6 to 4.0. Whatever the case is, it seems like I just have no luck with UCLA =</p>

Sorry about that, sigil. You still look set to get into some kickass programs though!

The average GPA is always skewed a bit higher than it really is if you're coming from a top school.

I've applied to Stanford for EE, Master's, and I've yet to hear from them. Anyone know when they plan on making the decisions by?

whacks, you should have an answer by this Friday.

i got into ucla, but only for the CS master's program. having got rejected from columbia's and duke's phd programs, i'm thinking i did the right thing by only applying to ucla's master's program.
