Fall 2006

when are we able to register for Fall 2006 classes?

You can register if you attend one of the Orientation sessions. Here's more info about the sessions & the costs of each session.

<a href="http://sait.usc.edu/orientation/fees.html%5B/url%5D">http://sait.usc.edu/orientation/fees.html</a></p>

If you can't attend any of the orientation sessions, I believe you can register just before school begins in August, but believe course selection will be more limited.

Yeah, in order to register, you have to have a permit for registration. All the current students are assigned a date and time on which they can begin registering, based on the number of credits they have (for example, I myself can begin registering on 4/14 at 12:15pm). Incoming Freshman will be assigned their permit time based on the orientation session they choose to attend. And note that seats in popular classes are allocated among different orientation sessions, so choosing the first orientation will not necessarily mean you will get the best choice in classes while choosing the last orientation does not mean there won't be much of a selection.

Hey redski.
Are you sure all the popular classes won't be taken the first session? I just made a tentative schedule (which I REALLY like) and I'm worried because I'm probably attending the final orientation session. And a question. Why are some of the freshmen courses already taken (for example, WRIT140 already has 5 out of 17 slots taken)? Is it mostly sophomores trying to fulfill their GE requirements? Thanks!

Eddieee, where do you even find the schedule of classes for WRIT140? I haven't seen a mention of it on the online schedule of classes.

When you look for cat 6 GE's, underneath, you'll find all the Writ 140 classes that are associated w/ that GE.

So if you can't attend the orientation, does it mean all the good classes will be filled? What are the popular classes anyhow? I really wanted Japanese whatever the first class is... (i want to study abroad so i thought might be the nice first step)

Hey guys,
For popular classes, they block off a certain number of seats. Basically, if you go right now, you'll see that a class in Cat. V has only 3 seats right now. Eventually, they will add on more seats per orientation session. For session F1, they'll add another 3 seats. Session F2, they 'll add on 3 more, and so on until they get to the real max, which is usually 26 for those classes. Note the numbers will be different for larger classes.

What I did when I couldn't get the class I wanted was I waited until the day of the next orientation, when I was back at home. That morning, I just logged on and found a few more seats added, so I grabbed one.

Do note that if you are registering in August, after the orientation, then I'm afraid you might not get your choice classes. Although, in that case, you can always go to the first class and ask the professor if they will add you in. Many of them are willing; all you do is get them to sign a form and you will be in then. And if they say no, then just wait a few weeks. Some people WILL drop the class, so some seats should open up then.

I'm not sure how they accommodate it for you future freshmen, but I attended the last orientation session last year and got all the classes I wanted.

I think the other concern is getting the SECTION you want so you don't end up having class at 8 AM every day.

huh??

but i am an itnernational student..our orientation is like august 16? will all the top chocies be gone??

I hate to tell you, but most likely yes. My roommate and several friends are also international. They said that they just accomodated random classes at the end.

aww bugger...

thats unfair :(

If you're really desperate to get into one class in particular, find out who your department advisor is and email/call them and explain your situation. If you find someone sympathetic they might lift your registration hold before august, so you can use the web registration system.

Ok people, this process of "blocking off seats" is actually occurring now.

If you take a look at the list of Cat V classes: <a href="http://www.usc.edu/academics/classes/term_20063/classes/arlt.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.usc.edu/academics/classes/term_20063/classes/arlt.html</a>, you'll see that all of the classes are right now closed at 6-13 people. The max for these classes range from 26-30. I don't know exactly when, but in a few days a few more seats should be added to each class. Just keep monitoring this page and you should get a good idea of what will be also done during the summer orientations.

Thanks redski for pointing that out. I was starting to wonder if there would be any classes left by August.

when do incoming freshman get the catalogue of all the classes

At orientation. If you're not going to orientation, then you can call your school and they'll mail it to you.
