Yay! Was looking for one of these. I’m transferring as a sophomore from Hofstra in Hempstead, New York (A.K.A. Long Island), and I’m trying to figure out this whole process.

I don’t know where I’m living yet, but I am trying to work through this whole roommate thing, since I want to room with someone that I’m totally compatible with.

say there’s four people in a quad. but oops! one goes abroad to Ghana. a transfer student fills in that quad and voila, there’s four people there and NYU makes money.

Is there some sort of housing preference form? If so, does it truly matter what we choose? I really don’t want to be stuck in any of the four locations designated for transfer students – it’s kind of a shame that freshmen have better dorming options than us. Where should I look to find non-transfer sophomore students looking for another roommate?

housing lottery for current undergrads already happened. you’re only shafted for one year. the following year, you get put into the current lottery pool.

this just makes it easier for NYU. it’s easier to fill in gaps in upperclassmen dorms with transfers, than to try to actually place them.

you can try to transfer to a different dorm. i think there’s a form you can file.

most sophomores have already received their housing assignments and roommate assignments.

Check the link missamericanpie posted above. It has the distances from WSP and objective comments. 2nd street is the only dorm that is actually close to campus, while the rest are like 15-25 minutes away, but they all have buses that stop by.

Sorry this is off topic missamericanpie, but I was wondering. Say in a year or two, I request roommates but go aboard for the fall semester. When I come back in the spring, will I get the roommates/dorm I requested or is it going to be completely random?

i’m not actually sure, because whenever people i know have gone abroad, they end up with random roommates in the spring. my first semester at NYU (i was a spring transfer) they put me in a room with a girl who went to London for winter semester.

i’m doing summer grad student abroad so i’ve never had to deal with this problem personally. when you do go abroad, call Housing and ask them what the deal is.

Ah I see. Cause I’m contemplating whether to go aboard in the fall or spring. Spring sounds a lot less of a hassle now lol. Is it possible to get any aid for summer aboard sessions?

You won’t get the same roommates when you come back unless, somehow, the person they replaced you with is going abroad/transferring/taking a leave of absence and you manage to convince Housing to let you into that dorm room. However, if you go abroad in the fall, you can request other study abroad kids to live with when you come back. If you go in the spring, you run the risk of not being able to enter the housing lottery and therefore being randomly assigned unless someone serves as your proxy.

you still take part in the lottery, even if you’re gone in the spring. you just have to deal with the time difference. but you’re still an NYU student even if you’re on another continent. :-P

Hi, im an incoming sophomore to Stern. Im not too sure about the dorms atm but im lookking at Brittany or Rubin since they seem nice and are really close to campus according to that WSN housing guide (id like to live in Rubin but its prolly full, correct me if im wrong). Anyone else considering those dorms?
