Hi, I was recently admitted into McCombs as a transfer, and I was wondering if anyone could add their input about the on-campus housing. I've looked through the big thread, but a lot of it is a little outdated (i.e. comments made before renovations to housing, etc) and a lot of people just put personal questions on it. So I wanted to hear opinions of people who lived on campus last year and hopefully make this thread relevant to all incoming freshmen and transfers for the Fall of 2011.

A little about myself:
I'm 18 years old, but I'm coming in as a Junior (long story, PM me sometime lol). I VERY much like to socialize and party - but not to any extremes (probably on most weekends, so 1-2 times a week). I'd consider myself an easy going dude, who likes making friends. No big qualms with others in general (except those with superiority complexes - we're all Longhorns darn-it!) Does anyone have any ideas about good housing that are close to the business buildings, etc. So far I've heard Jester (difference between East and West Jester?) and Moore-Hill are sociable, good locations, and just overall good. Anyone have anything else to add? I'd appreciate any updated information about dorms that anyone has to offer.

Oh, and feel free to PM me about anything and we can exchange information. I'd like to come as prepared to UT as possible. Hook 'Em!

Jester East or San Jacinto. They are close to McCombs and the majority of Jester East is renovated.

Anything you say about yourself being social (not just you, I mean any person in general), really does not matter as much as you’d think about dorm preferences. If you are a social person, you will find friends to hang out with, whether your dorm is social or not. And you will probably hang out not in your dorm (like around campus).

San Jac is $10k a year with private bath, which honestly I think is not worth the extra $2k. People say community baths are gross, which they are at first, but its not like diseases on the wall. They are cleaned every morning and you don’t have to clean it.

Being close to McCombs and food - J2 buffet dining, JCL ala-carte, Jester City Market (CVS-style store) will probably be the most important factors in dorm choice.

Fair enough Ace6903, so what you’ve said is more strictly based on location then? Do you know anything about Moore-Hill? It’s fairly close as well, no?

I’m a graduate student who is trying to fill my 3 bedroom/1 ba apartment. My roommates and I actually really like the place but we will all be out of Austin this summer (and it’s nearly impossible to sublet all 3 bedrooms). The unit can come partially furnished (a huge plus if you are relocated from out of state). The apartment is less than 10 minutes walking distance from the north-east corner of campus and close to the UT Red River bus line.

Xcellerator, did you end up taking the supplemental housing offer or Dobie/Castillian?
I applied in late October, so they said I should get something…
Do you have anything to add about housing at UT in general?

Moore-Hill is one of the “not as good” dorms. I don’t think they have sinks in their rooms (not 100% sure). But they are piloting the 24-hour guest hours policy at Moore Hill and Duren so that’s cool.

Yes, I would say location is most important. For example, if you live in the Honors Dorms and you are hungry at 2am, you are kind of out of luck and have to eat off campus. If you live in Jester/San Jac/Southeast dorms, you can go downstairs/walk to Wendys (inside Jester) at 2am. Also the PCL (big library) is close to the Southeast dorms and I see friends from north dorms there (its a 8-12 minute walk!)

Also the Reliant room in McCombs (open 24/7) is closer to the southeast dorms.

Would anyone happen to know when students begin to receive housing contracts, if not already? It seems that I’ve applied later than most, so I’m paranoid I’m not going to be able to live on campus in the fall… An admissions counselor in San Antonio as well as a few students that attend the school have told me that if I stick with my application, I’ll receive housing eventually even if it’s supplemental, though…

I called the Housing office and they said that transfers get the contracts between mid-May and June. AFTER the freshmen are all situated (unfortunately).

JammyD - I did neither. I roomed with a couple people in a nice condo in West Campus. Jester is good if you’re into socializing a lot. It’s pretty big. I’d personally choose it since it’s location is near the stadium, gym, and library. Moore-Hill’s just across the street from Jester. I hear it’s just as similar to Jester social wise. Don’t expect anything other than a bed to sleep on in those dorms. They’re also pretty small…

cold_katanagirl - I got an offer for supplemental housing I think late June or July.

Does anyone who applies for Jester get turned down? The reason I ask is because it is so big. I’m worried… I didn’t accept my contract until March.

I am trying to figure out housing also. I considered living in a dorm, but I am 23 and I doubt I would fit. I am semi-social, but not social enough for a dorm and 18 year olds again.

So, I think I will look for an apartment/room. When I look at the university apartments, I get the impression that they are completely full or in high demand. I can’t ever get anyone from UT housing on the phone.

I might honestly just be shopping for an place on craigslist and Google. Sheesh. Anyone know a good place/website to find a room or 1 bedroom?

Perfect situation: A house or 3 bedroom with like minded/aged engineering students.

I am locked in a circle of indecision. I also know I need to get this figured out soon to have any chance of getting a contract.

I know what you mean 4shotlatte. I can’t see myself living in a dorm. The age difference isn’t the main issue for me(21yrs old). I just need more of my own space and want to be able to cook. Good luck with your search! I’ve been using [Apartments for Rent - PadMapper Apartment Search for Oodle, Apartments.com, Kijiji, and Craigslist Apartments](<a href=“Apartments for Rent from the Trusted Apartment Finder | PadMapper”>http://www.padmapper.com/)

Anyone know of if there are any apartments that do roommate matching?
Sorry about taking the thread in a different direction Jammy.

I’m 21 and looking for an apartment too. Yeah, agree about the dorm life, can’t do that again. I’m looking for like-minded quiet roommate/s, science majors or not I could care less. A one-bedroom would be nice but I know I can’t afford that. I heard North Campus has apartments in a decent price range, I think I’ll look there first, but I’m not in a huge hurry. If anyone needs a roommate PM me (females). Thanks for that link it’s really useful btw.

I’m looking into housing right now as well.

I am just leaving home for the first time (I am transferring though) and coming from Seattle, Washington. I don’t party too much and I don’t want to be with tons of freshmen, but i want to experience college life. I could always get an apartment later on.

I was thinking a off-campus dorm maybe… But I don’t know which ones are good. Also prices… Out of state tuition is already so expensive.
