Best apartments for Fall 2011!?!

Our daughter will be moving out of Duren and in to an apartment, with three friends, this fall. They've begun looking near West Campus but I have some concerns with safety and rowdiness. It seems like North Campus may be a better fit for them. The girls have already gotten "help" from West Campus Living and have looked at approximately four properties (The Block and Jefferson 26, to name a few).

Above all else, I want to know what/where we should absolutely avoid! I know that we will not find the perfect place and will be sacrificing something. I just want input from those who have lived around campus or can share experiences of the area(s).

Thanks!

Make sure to check out the elevator situation if you are looking at a big apartment building. Sometimes there are too few for the number of residents or they aren’t terribly safe seeming. We ended up getting a condo in a smaller building for our son because the large buildings just weren’t as nice inside as they looked on the outside.

We just signed a lease with the Quarters at Neuces

I’m living at Quarters at nueces and its a nice place to live. The elevators are pretty fast the rooms are also nicer than most off campus dorms. I haven’t had any problems with any of the applicanes so far. Make sure you try to get a high floor as the problem bugs and other things on first or second floor.

You wouldn’t be able to share a room if live at Jeff. 26 so its liike wasting money unless you really want your own room for few hundered dollors more per month. Quarters have differnt locations but nueces is the closest to campus, which is why i preferred it…the further away.the lazier you are to go to classes. Not a big party scene at quarters as i heard from some people.

The block is also nice with a steel stair case…went there to a party once but def. check that out too.

It’s really hard to choose the places to “avoid” because everyone has a completely different opinion. My understand is that management companies change ALL THE TIME for West Campus apartments so one year they can be horrible, and the next year, due to “new management,” they can be much better.

The online reviews also aren’t very helpful because most management companies have really bad reviews. It’s pretty much the same for the reviews here in my city (Houston), so we really don’t trust the online reviews as much and merely use them as ONE source, not THE source.

My personal experience would say to do your homework and avoid anything that doesn’t seem right. I would however highly suggest sticking to West Campus because the proximity to campus makes it that much easier to go to class, stay involved with groups, and just get out of the house! lol My son lived in North Campus his Senior year and loved it but says North Campus, although quieter, is typically more upper class men.

Hi SixTexans:

My daughter and her roommate live at the Block on Pearl. It is a very nice apartment, location is great and they have enjoyed it but after only one 1 semester are ready to move out. Why, due to the noise. Since it is a basically all concrete it can be very noisy.

She found an apartment for next year on craigslist. This is still in west campus, a little farther away, but a smaller complex. It is a lot cheaper and parking is included. Hopefully, the neighbors won’t be as rowdy.

She did look at north campus but felt uncomfortable that it would not be safe. Just not as many people walking around.

Your daughter definitely needs to check out the Texan West and Vintage! Tell her to go to Uptown Realty-they are apartment locators that help you find the perfect place for FREE! And ask about the Vintage and Texan West. They are super safe luxury living apartments. They are close to campus and management is awesome!
