Got my ED Application in on time! Talked to Admissions and they said they still haven’t received my current college transcript and one of my recommendations, both of which were sent out over 3 weeks ago… This is why I usually do everything by hand.

If you want something done right, do it yourself. Ugh.

I sent in my ED application! I’m a non-traditional high school student and am applying to GS. I love this forum because I’m not able to talk much about GS with my friends because they are all applying to traditional four year universities. Good luck to everyone!

Hellojan, I am leaning towards Dartmouth, but I am trying to visit both schools. I assume the reason is the greater Yellow Ribbon support at Dartmouth?

Is there anyone on this board who is a military vet at Columbia right now? I would like to hear how much you need to take out loans or use personal money at Columbia GS with the Post 9/11 GI Bill right now.

I talked to someone who is a GS student right now and they said the average GS vet is taking somewhere between 5 and 10K a year. So if you think about the fact you’re going to Columbia, it’s pretty much free. Especially if you take into account the fact that the kids around you are all gonna be 210k in the hole and are probably getting degrees in Southeastern Asian Studies or something random like that. That’s how you end up occupying Wall St.

Anyway, that being said, the GI Bill seems to change weekly. So by the time the fall comes around there might be some new rules in place that’ll make it a little more costly in terms of loans and what have you.

Yeah, that is kind of the numbers I was getting too. That still isn’t really free, especially when I consider the Dartmouth costs (actually free).

I’m a future veteran as well (currently on a submarine). I sent off my application in early February, but I’m going to be out to sea A LOT in the coming weeks. Talk about stressful! Anyways, I am a nuclear reactor operator on the sub, SAT score of 2040, and what I hope is a strong essay. Best of luck to everyone!

Hey everyone, are recommendation receipt and processing typically slow processes? Everything else was in well before March 1, and the two professors told me they mailed at least a week before the deadline. It’s the only thing not received or processed when I check the admission portal with my CUID.

I gather those not being processed means the application is incomplete; obviously, it delays an ED but, does anyone know what happens? Am I automatically pushed back with RDs?

Submitted my app for early decision a while ago, still waiting for one transcript to process. I’m a Marine combat vet (former scout-sniper team leader, multiple combat tours), attended a community college, and I’m now at the University of Michigan in Dearborn. Had a rough time adjusting to the civilian world; I kind of came under some wanderlust after a rough breakup, climbed mountains, and neglected my studies. My GPA from the community college is only a 3.6, but if you exclude a nine credit hour class which I received a C in during my quest to find answers in solitude on the tops of mountains, then I have a 3.9 (40-some credit hours). I’m doing well at Michigan, just finished an eight week accelerated course which I earned an A in, so my Michigan transcript has me down for a 4.0 with three credit hours (hey, I’ll take it) and 11 more which I’m in the process of completing.

I drove to NYC a couple weekends back and took the GSAE, felt pretty good about it. Right now I live in an apartment by myself, work at a lumber yard in Detroit, and go to school full-time. I’m looking at GS’s Middle Eastern Studies program or Poli Sci with an emphasis on IR. If I don’t get in this time around then I’ll to take a Spring semester at U of M - D and give GS another shot. I really wish you all the best of luck.

Thanks,
Mike

(By the way, that nine credit hour class was an emergency medical technician course; like I said, I had a rough time and made some knee-jerk, scatterbrained decisions. Best of luck to you all.)

Hi afazchas, my letters of recommendation were posted about two weeks after they were sent in. But then it said they were processed about a week before it first got posted. You shouldn’t worry, your application will still be considered Early Action. If you have any questions, I would email or call the admissions office. Hope it helps!

I applied Early about a month ago and was planning to apply for financial aid (as international student) as well. However I haven’t gotten my University ID which I need to apply for Columbia GS scholarship. I have emailed them twice since then but didn’t hear back except two automatic answers saying that they are busy and will come back to me as soon as possible. Someone facing similar problems?

I know that the date that columiba hands out as far as ED decisions is May 1st but has anyone seen or heard of how early they actually start coming out? Not that I have a problem twiddling my thumbs and sweating til may, but figured it can’t hurt to ask.

That seems late, given that they have an Early Action program through which the LATEST they’d find out would be May 1st. Oh well… Beggers can’t be choosers.
