Fall 2013 Early Action

Everybody applying to Columbia has a high GPA. It probably wasn’t why you were turned down. There’s always next year.

I called GS this morning and after holding for about 15 minutes the woman came back and said my application was in “the final stages of review”. She then said to “expect a decision in a few weeks, allowing time for it to travel through the mail”. Of course my heart sank as mail isnt a good sign.

About 20 minutes after I accepted the fact that I was not admitted, I decided to try FA one last time - To my complete surprise - FA finally let me in!?!

Anyone have any ideas what this means? Can you be rejected and have the ability to log into FA?

This waiting and waiting is tedious to say the least…

I would bet 95% your in!

mesa918: did u have an interview ? i submitted all my stuff in on the same day as u, but i’ve heard nothing yet, and no, my FA could still not be logged in.

SpaceNerd: I’m in the same boat; I called today and they said it’ll still be a while. I finished everything on April 21st. I guess we’re just not as lucky.

For my essay, I wrote about how I was bullied in high school for being nerdy and loving science, and how that lead me into a nervous breakdown, and changing the course of my life. Eventually, I recovered, and did do well in college, graduating with a Bachelors and Masters of Arts in fashion design, as well as setting up and managing a business of my own. However, my heart has always belonged to Astronomy, and I have been fascinated with Astrophysics since a young age, and how I was so upset when I missed Halley’s comet all those years ago. I wrote then that since my recent diagnosis of Aspergers Disorder, I could finally forgive myself, realising that it was not my fault that I was bullied all those years ago. From that, I finally found the courage to want to pursue Astrophysics properly, and have been teaching myself a lot of physics and math recently.

Hopefully, it’s enough to explain why I am seeking a 2nd degree, and why that 2nd degree is so different from the 1st ones I had.

Spacenerd,

I did not have an interview and besides the FA login I have heard nothing. I am really not sure that the FA login means acceptance. When I login, it is showing financial info for the 2011/2012 academic year. My situation, like many of ours, is complicated - I had applied to Columbia Teachers College a few years back - I feel like the FA info being displayed is for that. But, at the same time, I am not sure why I was unable to login to FA until yesterday. I am not sure what changed - I have no idea.

Regardless, Spacenerd, our stories leading to GS are very similar. I am also seeking a 2nd degree. My undergraduate was in Fine Arts - Painting. I am now seeking a 2nd degree in Environmental Biology (something I always wanted to do but never did). Its a major switch to say the least.

I’ll keep you posted if I hear anything else.

argh… i called them, and they said it’s in the final stages of review, and that it will be a couple of weeks, and that the decisions go out via mail… grrrr…

Thats exactly what they said to me - word for word. I am not sure what is going on with the emphasis on regular mail… That was what made me think I was denied.

But what does it mean ??? grrrr…

Well, for my acceptance, they called me and told me they were sending a packet so hopefully you guys get some good news soon. Good luck!

Did anyone from Southern California or the West Coast get accepted?

Also, anyone else select the box for “The Arbor” in your Housing application? I still haven’t finished mine because I lack some information it asks, such as “registration date.”

Hi there, my essay was about overcoming challenges in life. I came to the United States at the age of 19, by myself, with $500 in the pocket. I worked as a live in nanny and was abused by my bosses, however, I followed my dream to work for United Nations. At the age of 20 I started to work at the UNHQ and later Consulate General of my country. I have outstanding recommendations from the consul general and a professor, who also taught at Columbia.

I did not take TOEFL exam yet and they postponed submitting it till July 1. I am super nervous as I don’t have much time to study for it. Are those test scores really important ?

Also, I brought one recommendation letter and transcripts in person about a week ago, however, my application says that it was not submitted yet. Hope it wasn’t lost :(

Everything on my application tracker online took awhile to update. When it finally did, it reflected being received weeks prior. I’m assuming they mark envelopes with the date items arrive and process them as they get time.

Don’t sweat it, your stuff should be there.

I have heard nothing else. I am really starting to believe that my ability to login to FA means nothing.

Courage, mesa 918, Courage !!

Has anyone else gained the ability to login to FA?

I just got the call!!!

I’m in… Beyond elated right now…

Look forward to meeting some of you on this journey :-)

I got the email !!! They asked me for my correct address for Fed-Ex!!!

Congrats SpaceNerd!

I had a feeling that you were next since they said the same exact thing to us on the phone :-)
