Fall 2014 Transfer Thread

If i’m not mistaken it’s only the classes that transfer, like any developmental classes won’t be calculated in…

Current college : Houston Community College
Current GPA : 3.94 with 46 hours completed, 14 in progress
College applied to : COLA
Major : 1st choice - History
2nd choice - English
List extra curriculars : None, minor work experience, and I was nominated for HCC history student of the year (results pending).
Essays : My essays were pretty weak, they explained enough about me but I didn’t get enough time on them. Sent the app last minute. This is really what has me worried
Number of letters of Rec and who wrote them : 2 letters from History PhD’s at CC. I didn’t read them but one of the professors said they had both “recommended me highly”.

So what do you think my chances are? I’m pretty nervous because of the essays and lack of EC’s to be honest. Also I have a GED and not a high school diploma.

@Saborak
Just for clarification. Let’s say I took 17 hours last semester but only 13 hours transferred. My GPA for the 13 hours is what they use for admissions?

@Korsgaard I think they consider your overall GPA meaning they also take the classes that don’t transfer into UT into consideration when making a decision. I could be wrong on this information tho. I’d call and ask. Hope this helps.

@danfer91 You have perfect stat, GPA is the most important factor so you should feel confident about your chance, I would be surprised if you don’t get in.

There is no way danfer is not getting in.

@Korsgaard they take into consideration any courses that you have taken that are also available at UT. For example at Baylor we take Rel 1310 and Rel 1350. Rel 1310 is a course at UT but Rel 1350 is not, therefore whatever grade I got in Rel 1310 will be added to my GPA and Rel 1350 would be completely disregarded. I hope that makes sense?

@baylorgal123 yes that makes sense. Thanks.

Hi,

I just applied to UT for transfer into the petroleum engineering program.
Do you guys know if UT does rolling admissions? and they say they compare the pool of people…But are you at a disadvantage if you apply later than someone who applies earlier despite comparing stats? Is that true…?

Anyway, here are my stats:

Currently at: University of Houston Main Campus- chemical engineering undergraduate program
sophomore, 3.6 GPA (on 63 credit hours)
a lot programs, leadership positions, and 63 course hours, essays are pretty good
applied to petroleum engineering for fall 2014 transfer

If someone could reply that would be great. How many have gotten acceptances to their petroleum enginering program for transfer fall 2014?

Thanks in advance!

@maria268 I’m not an engineer major but I have been on this board for about a year and from what I heard, engineer and business is the hardest school to get in. There are a lot of people who have 3.8 or 3.9 and still could not get in. As for the admission, I think it doesn’t matter how soon or late you apply, as long as it is on time.

@maria268, what is your second choice major?

Yeah engineering is pretty difficult.

@maria268 I personally know people who have transferred in with less than a 3.4. You have a lot of hours completed and a 3.6 with 63 complete is pretty strong as compared to 15 hours and a 3.9. Have you completed Diff Eq. and/ Linear yet? Bottom line is Petro is tough to get into, but you certainly can do it with your stats. Keep the belief and good luck to you.

@foafoa, thanks for your advice. I appreciate it. I just got confirmation that they don’t do rolling.

@goathammer, oh wow, what year are you referring to and are you talking about their petroleum engineering program? Because I know it is crazy competitive. I know a family friend who internally transferred to petro E and he had a 3.9 But praying and hoping for the best and that whatever should happen will happen. Thanks so much for your support! best of luck to you as well :)

And right now I’m in engineering math and a few other upper level courses. engineering math is strictly ODE. UH has engineering math and then it’s PDE so it’s two different courses. in terms of my basic courses- they are all done. I did them freshman year at UH-Main Campus and first semester sophomore year.

@goathammer, yeah I’m hoping they will take the hours and GPA into consideration and that I’m coming from UH-Main campus already in their chemical engineering program.

@lovechickfila, another engineering major. So currently I am in the chemical engineering degree plan at the University of Houston, but I decided to switch majors. So right now I’m taking petro classes in the UH petroleum degree plan. I chose engineering as my second choice again, because if for whatever reason I am not accepted into their engineering program I wouldn’t choose to go to UT. (I have so many hours done and I’m already in engineering at UH Main campus that if I don’t get into engineering at UT I only have 3 more years at UH and I can graduate with a petroleum degree)- granted I understand the reputation with A&M and UT petroleum versus UH petroleum-- we’re still working on that. But I love my school and UH is great in terms of industry support and the curriculum. (other reasons for transferring regrading what family are saying…blah blah) plus my older sister graduated UT petroleum in 06’. so yeah.

Hello guys! If ya’ll don’t mind, I’d like to post my stats for UT as well. I’ve posted my stats on here a long time ago, and I’m posting again just to get more input, since I’m a bit worried.
-College: I’m currently an undecided freshman at UH and I took 13 hours of classes the past fall and I took a winter class. So I currently have
16 hrs and I’ll be taking 14 hrs this spring semester.
-GPA: 4.0
-I applied to Petroleum Engineering as my first major and UGS as the second.
-EC’s:
High School-
Ace Mentor (2012 - 2013) : Intern
Clubs:
Mu Alpha Theta
American Red Cross
Youth Expanding Services Club
School Robotics Team (2009 - 2011)
Community service: 253 total hours in ONLY high school.
Holding the Gold Presidential Service Award in 2012 by volunteering over 250 hours in a single year.

College:
Clubs:
Geology Club
Math Club
Science Club
Internship:
Ace Mentor Program(Intern)
Volunteer hrs- 50 hours only in college.
-I have 2 rec letters. One from my Calc 2 professor, and another from my Hist teacher. I’m taking another Hist class of hers again. So, she knows me very well.
-Essays- I wrote 3 essays. They are super strong. I spent a long time on them and they’ve been proofread by several professors and friends of mine. They are strong.

I posted a shorter version of my resume above. Hope it’s not too messy. Along with my stats, I do have a few questions to ask about the UT admissions. Even though I have a 4.0, Do you guys think I’ll be able to get into petroleum engineering with it? I’ll most likely be getting a 4.0 during the spring semester as well. Hopefully! And I know I’ll be receiving my decision pretty late because UT admissions said they’d have to wait for my final transcript after I finish my 14 hours in the spring semester. I’m really worried. Hope my stats are good enough. Thanks for the help in advance!

When you guys asked for Rec letters, did you tell them that you are transferring?

@Korsgaard You have to tell them that you are transferring to UT, that’s way they would know what to add into the letter. I think all my professor open their letter with something like “To the admission office of UT”

@rohanchittur, no knows what UT will do…We do know they do a hollistic review meaning looking at all aspects of your application (even though it’s understood and known that GPA does play a big factor in it). Among the others, they also look at your courses, grade trend, and how they see you fit into their school --all assuming but it makes sense those play a factor.

With that being said, no one here can tell you yes you’ll get in, no you won’t…it’s all based on the pool of people applying and granted everyone wants to get into Petroleum. It’s just a waiting game. You seem to have pretty good stats, but you’re also competing with other people older, more credits, etc. So everyone has their disadvantages and advantages.

Didn’t mean for it to be a rant, we just don’t have a definite answer for anyone until obviously we hear back from the school. Hope this answers some of your questions.
