@Flyer888 as Cayton has mentioned, as long as you’ve only been to CC you can take however many units as you wish (but I assume this won’t look to good on your record). Things are a bit dicey if you have attended a 4-year university previously. For me I wasn’t eligible for transfer for most UCs during 2013 for I was way past the cap, but I believe starting 2014 there has been a policy change. I don’t understand the actual details but if majority of the classes are lower division courses from 4 year universities then you can surpass the cap. Again, I don’t know the details on what changed but I transferred with 200+ units (only credited with 105 units). Also, only the transferable units count.

Just to add…

AP credits will give you credits in addition to the 60 units, which I did not like. They tell you that most students can only transfer a maximum of 70 units, but it doesn’t apply if you also have AP scores I guess. With my AP scores, I now have 78 units here at Cal my friend, who also transferred with AP scores, has 82 units. I just wanted 70 units…sigh.

@jonjon03 do you think the change is set up to allow more OOS (higher tuition)?

@ocnative

On the plus side, you don’t have to take as many classes to graduate from Berkeley, now.

@lindyk8 I can’t say for sure not knowing the exact details but could definitely be a possibility. I don’t know for sure but UCs have some limit on amount of students they can admit from oos or international students and they could’ve bend the unit limit a bit to allow more oos in. Again all guess work…no guess we can compare numbers of 2013 and 2014 oos admits.

The UCLA counselor appointments fill up so fast at SMC! I seriously don’t know what to do since this was my 3rd time trying. Is there any way to just go over to UCLA and talk? I think I read somewhere that they discourage transfers from just showing up on campus… :(

@luckie1367 From experience a decent counselor from your cc should have the same amount of info as the ucla rep. Unless you have a very particular question, I think you be fine meeting with regular counselor.

@luckie1367

You’re in SMC’s TAP program; the counselors there are very knowledgeable about all transferring to UCLA. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t talk to a UCLA rep if possible, but I think that your counselor will be able to help you. They’re way more helpful than typical community college counselors.

I agree with the Scholars counselors, I have an appointment scheduled. But I like to hear it from the horses’ mouth, as the saying goes :)

@luckie1367

Understandable.

Do you guys know if there’s an update to enter Winter grades? Are they considered as well, or just Fall?

IF the winter semester ends (and you get your grade) before Jan 31, you can submit them with the update.

After that you can send them in, but they might not be used for admission purposes.

@luckie1367

UCLA considers updates made to the application all the way until March. Seriously.

Yay! Since I’m taking some fluff classes in winter, hopefully they’ll see a great GPA!

That’s great news, I just dumped a class and pushed it to Winter, but I want them to see it, so good news.

If your CC doesn’t have TAP, are there any other ways to increase your chances of transferring to UCLA?

@rojogaleana12

Completing all pre-reqs by the end of Fall always looks good.

Thanks! @Cayton

High high high GPA - goes without saying…

Hi guys,

Does the sentence “There are seven lower division courses total, at least four of which should be completed by the end of fall prior to transfer” mean by the fall of 2014 (current semester) or next fall (by next semester)?

I currently have 3/4 pre-reqs done and I am taking the rest next semester because of the lack of space in my current schedule.

THANKS
