Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

@luckyname Well that I don’t know. Usually, I thought you just petition into it after you get there and have completed whatever it says needs to be completed before petitioning. And yes, you have to be in your major. What is ADP? Architectural design?

UPDATE: ok, it’s applied dev psych. It says you can apply in Jan and April, so you would do it in Jan, start of second quarter. It says in the meantime, you can start taking courses.

@lindyk8 Thanks for responding! One more thing. Does it matter if it’s in progress right now or do I need to have a letter grade sent to the school already to be considered competitive.

I have a UID, is that the same as a student ID for UCLA? There’s a link to activate it to see other information but I’m not sure what school ID they’re talking about?

@odabach do you have another math course with a letter grade? If this is the only one and it is in progress, I don’t know how that will play out. A lot of them like seeing some sort of math letter grade somewhere on the transcript, and some like to see this course completed earlier. I think if you have another math course, you should be OK. Fullload seemed to get the OK, although they did take the time to ask why he held off, so obviously it bugged them. Maybe if you think you’re getting a good grade you could call admissions. They really won’t take your word for it, but you never know, calling and showing concern might impress them if there is a potential issue. At this late date, they probably have everything decided. But you could call or shoot them an email.

I also don’t want to get you freaked out because this could be a big bunch of nothing. Just being pro-active.

JFC you all scared me with these notifications. I thought maybe UCLA had released decisions!

@fullload‌ https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/myApplication/Login.aspx see help on ID, 7 digits

Edited to add: when you applied in November, you received an email with the id:
Dear ________,

Your University of California application for admission has been successfully submitted. Your UC Application ID number is nnnnnnn. Please refer to this ID number in any correspondence with UC.

@lindyk8 Thanks again! I’m not freaked out, I’m just asking for a friend since he’s the one that’s taking the required course right now and doesn’t have a grade for it yet. I finished the math portion my first semester :slight_smile:

@zeppelinlover Awesome!! Thank you so much for the info!! I will be sure to take a look at that link! :slight_smile:

@odabach‌ At my D’s CCs, College Algebra is not an IGETC math course and it is not a UC transferable class. The minimum math to meet that requirement was a liberal arts math course or stats. College Algebra was a prereq for liberal arts math. What CC are you at?

@lindyk8…I just emailed the soc dept advisor to see if she was familiar with anyone getting in before without the stats class. I know she doesn’t have any pull, but at this point I will take any input I can to calm my kid’s nerves!

But I may just get to the point where I grovel. I hate doing it because people brush you off treating you like a helicopter parent, but come on! Its not her fault she can’t get in the required class after trying for 3 quarters!! She is registered through UCSC’s disability office for learning disorders and anxiety and I may have to pull that card because she has been off-the-charts upset since finding out on Friday that she can’t get into the stats class.

I always feel like the freak mother who makes calls on my kid’s behalf even though she’s 20, but she sometimes has a really hard time verbalizing herself and then we end up with no solution because the person on the other end didn’t really understand what she wanted in the first place. I kept thinking I should call, but didn’t know how it would go over…but now that I know you would do it if you were in my shoes then I’m going to do it!

Thanks for the encouragement!

@Happy2Help I didn’t take it at a CC. I took it at a CSU. I’ve taken most of the other IGETC courses at Glendale Community College. The math class I took at my CSU is equivalent to Math 100 at GCC, which is UC transferable and completes the math portion. If taking stats is a UCLA thing then I’m screwed because I haven’t taken it, nor do I plan on taking it. I’ve gotten into UCSB and haven’t heard from anyone else so far so now I’m scared lol.

@zeppelinlover I know EXACTLY what you are saying! Everyone has this negative attitude about the parent who intervenes. But for God’s sake, these kids are only 19 or so and things can get messed up fast, and a lot of these advisors just aren’t on the ball, due to budget cuts or other issues. They have a hundred kids to counsel. I backed off a few times with some negative outcomes (very minor) and a friend who is NOT a helicopter mom said she contacted UNC at Chapel Hill for some stuff on behalf of her daughter - TWICE. The sense I get is admissions realizes that kids need help when they’re just starting out. Most kids hate talking on the phone and are scared (kind of) of authority figures.

And when I said grovel, I don’t really mean that. Just call and ask what the situation is when she couldn’t get in the course. Or even email. They’re usually good at getting back to you.

@zeppelinlover‌
2 suggestions:

  1. See if Stats is offered through UC Cross Enrollment. (Google it) If it is, then she can potentially take online thru amother UC. Right now, I’m taking an elective thru UCSC. No extra fees or anything.

  2. See if she can enroll in a Stats class through a CCC this summer. At least then when you’re “groveling”, you can say that she’s enrolled, and pending completion, she’ll have met the prereqs.

EDIT: it’s not too late to enroll for this quarter thru UC Cross Connect

@odabach‌ GCC has different IGETC math requirements than what I’ve seen. Also since you were accepted to UCSB (congrats!) the CSUN course was accepted there.

My concern is from http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/tradms.htm, “One transferable math course that has a prerequisite of intermediate algebra or higher.” It isn’t clear to me whether your College Algebra can be taken after an intermediate level algebra class. I don’t mean to scare you!

Edited to add:
@zeppelinlover‌ see same link, http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/tradms.htm “…must be completed by spring prior to transfer” so finding Stats this spring is imperative. Summer is likely too late.

@zeppelinlover I really understand where you’re coming from when it comes to speaking on behalf of your daughter, I really do (I’m very shy and get nervous when it comes to this stuff) but I encourage you to encourage your daughter to try to speak to these counselors on her own behalf. Over the phone might be a bit intimidating but having her shoot them an email can go a long way and demonstrate to these people that she is willing to take the initiative on her own education. You and I understand that people that are 19/20 can get really intimidated by authority figures, but they might see it as a “hover parent” trying to fight for their child - which could rub them the wrong way. It’s great practice when it comes to dealing with professors and academic advisors in the future (I speak from my own experience at a UC the past two years). Ultimately it’s your call, but I just thought I’d offer some advice.

You can still take a late-start Stats class for Spring at CC’s, and, UCLA Extension still has Stats openings for Spring too.

@fullload‌
Once you transfer to a UC, you can’t take simultaneous classes at a CC or Extension. You can only take non-UC classes during summer, or if you’re doing a study abroad or something.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the clarity.

@Happy2Help Yeah, getting into UCSB (thank you by the way!) is kind of why I have some hope. Correct me if I’m wrong, but SB takes the math portion seriously so I guess what I did worked.

Intermediate algebra?? Wow that IS weird, because intermediate algebra at my CC isn’t even UC transferable. You need to take intermediate algebra in order to take college algebra, unless of course you passed the math entrance exam.

@happy2help I think int algebra is considered sub-college so college algebra is above it. But don’t quote me as I’m not a math person.
