Can someone please chance me?
@PassiveAggresive you’re being very passive aggressive right now
@PassiveAggresive what’s your stats?
@enpz45 arghhh can’t control it. Need food.
@LynAmmo
I am currently a second year international student studying computer science and I will be applying for transfer in Feb.
I do not know if they consider high school extracurricular activities so I will skip those and stick to the ones I have in college.
GPA-3.6
I don’t know if I am missing pre-reqs right now.
SAT-2120
Extracurriculars-
1)Research assistant in machine learning
2)Internship in web application development -to provide students,in a remote location, with the resources to access the only well equipped lab in the region to perform tests and get the results easily.
3)Summer Program- Studied server side programming at a govt funded research institute for one month and developed a messenger application of my own.
4)Worked as a teaching assistant/tutor under a scheme to pique the interest of and assist new students in computer science.
5)Again, I do not know if this actually carries any significant advantage but I have developed a plethora of projects of my own. These projects encompass about 13 languages and 9 technologies. Also, I have completed 5-6 courses online such as advanced algorithms, machine learning, quantum computing, quantum cryptography and Computer architecture.
6)Member of the computer science club which represents the university in various competitions. Currently ranked 18261/625000 on HackerRank.
I would also like to know about any university that I may seem qualified for and whether or not my projects actually matter.
Thanks guys
@PassiveAggresive Those ECs are probably the best I’ve seen on this thread but you should be aware that Computer Science has an insanely low acceptance rate of below 10%. I’m not exactly sure how their admission works in these cases but I would say you have a decent shot.
@PassiveAggresive Yes! Yes, your extra-curriculars should be listed, they’re awesome. Computer Science is highly impacted, so you need to check and see how many pre-reqs you’re missing (if any). You can check that on assist.org. You mentioned you’re an international student which is much harder to get accepted, but I would still apply because none of us on here are experts. The only thing more I can advice is to bring your GPA up because, for this major, the 75% percentile is a 4.00 and the 25th percentile is a 3.81: http://www.admission.ucla.edu/PROSPECT/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof16_mjr.htm#SEAS This shouldn’t discourage you, but rather be a motivating factor to bring your GPA up in order to be more competitive. Good luck!
@LynAmmo Thanks! I know my GPA is probably my weakest part. Can you recommend any other universities either??
@mightyMETA Thanks! The low acceptance rate is exactly what freaks me out!!
Im just wondering, does anyone plan on listing their SAT or ACT scores on their application, maybe in the additional comments or someplace else? I’m a one year transfer, so I took the SAT within the last year. I received a 2280, which is generally pretty competitive among freshman applicants, but I’m wondering if admissions would even consider the SAT score of a transfer student. Any suggestions?
@TL0067 I was wondering the same thing. Let me know if you find out!
You are not supposed to list them. I have been seeing threads up here erroneously saying to do it, but I have seen references from the UC not to. I guess they won’t care. But if they don’t want them, why do it? That’s my feeling, anyhow.
With regard to the personal insight questions, do you guys think its a big deal if one of my responses is only 230 words rather than the entire 350 limit? I feel as though what I have written is really good and directly answers the question, I am just worried that it’s a bit short.
@gosteelers123abc one of the admissions people told me they made the word count shorter to ensure more concise responses and less fluff/story telling so you’re probably ok.
Length is irrelevant. Don’t pad. It’s fine.
@Ohm888 Mr. Ohm, I have two questions for you at this time:
- I've been a part-time student most of my semesters but have consistently worked over 40 hours a week as well. Disadvantage or no?
- I'll be missing one prerequisite course for math (but a random one, I'll have all the math, physics, and comp sci); how big of a disadvantage is this?
- It shouldn’t matter.
- I have no idea what you mean by missing a random pre-req. if it’s required it could be a problem. What does it say on assist?
God, I know these are annoying… but I would be so happy if someone could chance me… (^-^)_/
Major: Pre-Psychology (i know this is competative af)
GPA: 3.93 right now (hopefully 3.95 but maybe 3.89 after Fall, depending on if I get all A’s or one B)
Major GPA: 4.0
Pre Reqs: Done by Spring (1 more)
IGETC: YES
TAP: NO
ECs: hospital volunteer internship, some tutoring for children/teens, red cross instructor
Personal Statement: meh maybe 7/10 - I kept it pretty formal and to the point, I lived in Japan for 17 years growing up as a military kid (so I played that card and talked about that).
@mightyMETA if it’s a required class, then you absolutely need it done by spring 2017. If its only a recommended/desired class then its not necessary to complete it. They have accepted people in the past that were missing a requirement, but if it’s an impacted major its unlikely to happen.
@junemoon You stats look very competitive, I’d say you have a good chance.
@Ohm888 assist just says that the calculus sequence and either linear algebra or differential equations is required to transfer then lists a bunch of classes; by random I mean a course that’s not necessarily related to the major (biology can even satisfy the missing course, for example).
@justinmega1 Yea they say they only require the math courses for transfer on assist and luckily my major’s not impacted so it looks like it’s not the end of the world.
Thanks for your response guys
