FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

I’m really anxious for upcoming decisions. What do you think?

Major: Communications
GPA: 3.93
Major GPA: 4.00
IGETC: Completed by spring
Major prep: Missing 2 (not offered at my cc)
EC’s: Gymnastics coach since high school, coordinated a concert to benefit charity, and organized an event to cut homeless people’s hair.

Will they factor my age into my admission? I’m 18 and I know the average student is 20 or older, so will my age be a disadvantage?

@ajayhh schools won’t / can’t consider age, just mainly grades, essays, and curriculars

@johnfuentesa if you can do it online, then I would just update it on the website. However, I think it would be a good idea to call and verify that they changes were received and updated. Printing out a copy of the TAU before and after might also be a good idea. I know this sounds like “extra” but it’s better to be safe than sorry! It would be a shame if that was to be the one thing that stopped you from getting into the school.

@ajayhh they cannot negatively factor in your age, but they can consider it in this light, as quoted by the UC:

So if you were a prodigy who is set for college at age 12 or 13 or even 16, they might look upon that favorably (who knows?). In your case, being 18, they may give points or they may not, but it will not have a negative impact.

The UCs are holistic so look at a lot of things.

does ucla not accept sophomore transfers?

Major: Electrical Engineering
GPA: 3.42
Major GPA: 3.15
IGETC: Everything except foreign language
Prereqs: Everything except Circuits
TAG: No
ECs: REU at UC Riverside in Materials Science and Engineering
Treasurer of Math Club at both Fullerton and Cypress College
Participated in Psychology Club and Astronomy Club
Volunteered at elementary school for 2 years
I work 20-40 hours every week

@a1h313 no, UCLA does not accept sophomore transfers. sorry :frowning:

@a1h313 Every year there are random specific majors that are open to sophomores, UCLA-included. (This year art and design were open to sophomores at UCLA, I know for sure.) Anyway, it varies year to year. You need to go to the Open/Closed major page on the UC site to see the list. It only shows up during application period, I believe. There aren’t very many, but biology is often open at some UCs, I remember seeing that.

What do you guys think my chances are?

Major: Communications
UC GPA: 3.85 (B in Stats)
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Completed
Units Completed: 102

I didn’t specify a back up major but should I have? is it too late to make changes?

EC’s:

  • I’m interested in the major because of the type of work i do, I work 40 hours a week m-f for an ad agency executing marketing campaigns for various brands and retailers through influencer marketing and social media. I wrote about this in one of my personal statements.
    -I have some but not a lot of volunteer experience with Seniors with Disability, due to my schedule i couldn’t volunteer as much. Dedicated volunteer work with seniors to my late great grandfather.
    -I had to drop school in 2012 due to help my family financially after a death in the family so my gpa dropped to 2.7 and I decided to change my major in 2016 when I decided to finish, so I will be applying with 2 transcripts and 2 GPAS.

Target schools: UCLA

Transfer updates are due tomorrow and currently I’m enrolled in an 8 week course. It’s a quite easy course which I will easily get an A in. This A will overall boost my gpa to a 3.6 and I was wondering if I should update it as an A grade rather than an In Progress.

@Asharya It’s up to you, but remember that if you don’t get an A, they’d rescind your acceptance.

pleeaaaase chance me I’m so anxious

@brnnbrnn

Hi,

Your GPA is lower than the average accepted for a communications major, which I believe is around 3.92. Have you completed all the major reqs? Your EC’s seem strong and interesting. I don’t really know how the two transcripts thing works. I hope you explained your situation on the application, that would boost your chances. And from what I know they don’t take alternative majors into account unless you are a part of the UCLA TAP program. I think you have a shot. Good luck!

@ajayhh

I don’t think age plays a factor. I think you have a solid shot considering your GPA matches the average for accepted communications transfers. Good luck!

@champagnemami

I think you have a fair shot. Your GPA is about the average for your major(3.75) and you have strong EC’s. Good luck!

All major prep work will be completed in a week, I went into detail on my personal statements about how large a role working 2-3 jobs after my grandfather passed played in the demise of my school work and how this time around i can manage it since i dont have to work crazy hours and it feels right. I also tied in how my much I learn about marketing and business at my current job, and thats why I’m interested in the major.

What do you guys think my chances are?
