FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

Wow! Your stats look really impressive. Are you an OOS or UC-UC? I’d say you have a really good chance

@acal7504 I’m a California CC to UC. I know my GPA’s not too impressive, but I’m hoping the ECs make up for it.

UCLA is my #5 choice after attending the CCCP scholars program. I was not impressed when one of the head staff members told us that if we were considering a heavily impacted major, we should think long and hard if attending UCLA is more important than our major. If it is, then it would be wise to switch to an easier major…lol. Not to mention the constant bragging about how many people apply and how “we don’t have to shake trees for applications”. Everything about that experience rubbed me the wrong way. Maybe it’s because I am an older student but substance is everything, that superficial stuff does not fly with me. To each their own.

@bugajskj i think they were giving you sound advice. I dont think it was meant to be a brag. If a person really wants to attend UCLA (and for many, that is paramount) then think long and hard about choosing an impacted major, as they have so many applicants (the most in the country), they give very little leeway. I’d like to know limitations to the selection process in advance rather than coddling me and encouraging me to choose a major I’m not competitive enough for and then watch as I get rejected. It doesn’t sound superficial to me.

I am pretty sure most people should know the general stats of admittance into the top tier schools of California. Majors in Business, Engineering, etc. are impacted across the board in the UC system. It is going to be highly competitive whether you are going to UCB, UCSD, or UCLA. However, telling someone to consider if their brand is more important than a career choice is superficial in my book. The UCLA brand won’t carry much weight in the real world if you majored in “Chicano studies”. My career and field of study is paramount. Like i said, to each their own. The school is still in my top 5 so I won’t completely hate on them. Good luck to those that applied.

@Ohm888 @bugajskj While the advice was valid, I don’t think it was appropriate. In the long run, choosing a major you are interested in and have a desire to be good at is what will matter in the end. Sure, UCLA is a fantastic school, but you shouldn’t choose a whole different major just to get in. For example, a passionate engineering student shouldn’t change their major to history just to attend UCLA, that’s just stupid.

We really don’t know how it was worded, so I cannot say it was inappropriate. OP does not seem to have a good opinion of UCLA. And i think it is relevant if too closely related majors give a borderline person a better chance. It’s all in delivery, right?

@justinmega1 My point exactly. I am just speaking from my experience. Every school I have visited bragged about themselves. However, UCLA was the only one that bragged about their brand to go as far as telling prospective students to consider the importance of attending UCLA over their major. Maybe it was just the program I attended, who knows.

@bugajskj ok, I see.what’s your major?

@Ohm888 My opinion of UCLA changed after this event. My opinion was obviously high enough before to apply and attend the CCCP scholars program there. I was just responding to @Eddieready on why this school is everyone’s top choice. The statement was not that complicated, “If you are really worried whether you will get in or not and you are in an impacted major, you should consider what is more important to you…attending UCLA or the major you are choosing.”
Either way, UCLA won’t shed a tear for me, it’s ok. Maybe I am just meant to become a Trojan…hah.

@Ohm888 Accounting/Econ

Ah we cross-posted. Econ/acctng - tough major. Anyway, onwards and upwards.

This is a little random but I just checked the date for transfer bruin day and I was really surprised to see it’s only about 2 weeks after decisions are posted! Holy crap that’s fast. Anyone planning on going if admitted? Can’t believe we only have around a month and a half left to wait… X_X

@justinmega1 People do this, though. Students consistently choose a major that is “easier” to get into just so they can get into UCLA, that is not an abnormal thing for most students to do. You should most certainly think long and hard over whether you are just trying to get into UCLA or if you’re trying to learn because you may or may not be happy with your major. Academics here are not a joke, especially being on the quarter system. Sometimes having the will to do well is not enough to get through your classes, especially your core classes.

I had a friend who was a reagent’s scholar in the Business Economics major and he consistently boasted about “work hard and you can get through anything,” yet he’s graduating with a 2.8 GPA. I’m sure the guy worked hard, but that department kicked his ass, and he failed many classes. There are other people in those majors who are legitimately in that major because they are interested, and it will suck for someone in the long run who is solely there for an essentially baseless substance because of the way professors grade on a curve.

I have a 3.1 I’m a uc to uc transfer from Davis what are my chances as African American studies major

I’ll definitely be there if admitted! :smiley: @rainbubble

Can anyone chance me please??

Major: Theatre Arts (TFT)
UC GPA: 4.0
Major GPA: 4.0
IGETC: Will be completed by Spring 2017
Major Prep: There was none
TAP: X

EC’s: a founder of volunteer club, rep of unicef club, foreign language tutor, some volunteer works, participated in school theatre shows.

I had an interview at UCLA in January and submitted supplemental documents as well(theatre resume, portfolio, etc.). Can’t concentrate on anything:( wish they release the decisions like tomorrow

@erica37 Based off of UCLA’s numbers last year, they only took about 8% of applicants from your major, but your GPA is above the average accepted (3.59 to 3.81). I think with your EC’s and the fact that you’re TAP certified, you have a very good change of getting in! I know the feeling of impatience, April 21st seems so far away!

(If you were wondering where I got my numbers: http://www.admission.ucla.edu/PROSPECT/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof16_mjr.htm#TFT)

honestly, waiting for my TFT decision is gonna drive me crazy! I wish they had set dates but with so many applicants, I understand why they don’t.
