@LynAmmo Yeah, the counselors just help you with picking your courses (which you can plan it yourself) or clearing the prerequisites (when you have cleared the pre-req but the system doesn’t allow you). And our transfer center is where you get more info and depth about transferring. So the counselors are for more genuine purpose. Those who want to succeed in transferring to 4 year university (private or UC/CSU) visits the transfer center to get more information.
Thank you for your help again! I’ll definitely be in touch with you if I have any more questions! I’m taking Spanish 102 right now and a world lit class upon ur daughters recommendation! Next semester I’ll take my 2nd world lit class and I’ll be done with that! Thanks again!
Hey guys, can someone chance me for Mechanical Engineering?
Major: M.E.
Overall GPA: 3.73 (around 70 credits)
Major GPA: 3.9-something (only one B in Calc 2)
IGETC: Complete but not necessary
Prereqs: Complete (I’m taking the last 2 physics classes in Spring)
TAG: no
TAP: Yes, I’m in my college’s honors program.
ECs: My first year of college I joined the STEM club at my school and I also worked part time because my Dad lost his job. So, even though my first year was mainly GE classes, I still got B’s in a couple of them, which ultimately brought my overall GPA down. Anyways, this is my third year in the STEM club and I continue to hold a board position. I did an internship related to engineering for a few months and even wrote my own app. There’s also a couple other things so I think I’m safe on that front, but I know that they care about GPA the most. My safe school is probably UCSD, but I’d like to go to either Berkeley/LA. I just hope that they can take into account an upward trend. Pretty pessimistic
@justinmega1 UCSD is your safe school?? They were brutal last year for engineering. If you read the thread for last year even some people with 3.8+'s didn’t get in or got accepted but only as undeclared. I would definitely TAG a school, the application opened today. The 2015 25th percentile admitted GPA for UCLA’s Mechanical Engineering is 3.78, the 75th percentile is 4.0: https://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof15_mjr.htm#SEAS if that helps. They didn’t yet post it in detail for 2016. Idk for Berkeley, both UCLA and Berkeley have definitely tried a more holistic approach, so we all have a good shot this year hopefully :D/ I think you have an awesome shot, but still TAG or have a backup because UCSD is definitely not a “safe” school and your major is impacted. Awesome EC’s! Good luck!
how do i tag a school? would that affect my chances of getting into ucla?
@LynAmmo Yeah UCSD is kinda weird. I see students all the time with 3.5’s being admitted, but then a bunch of 3.9s don’t get in. Maybe it’s because UCSD thinks that the 3.8-4.0 won’t SIR anyways? I really don’t know…
@cmdchavezz No it won’t affect your chances at all. It’s just good to know that at least you are guaranteed somewhere. Here is the link if you want to do it: https://uctap.universityofcalifornia.edu/students/
@justinmega1 Seriously! That makes me so mad when I see that, but you never know what’s on their application. There has been more money added to the budget so hopefully they can admit more students this year like the last one! [-O<
@lynammo ohh ok, thank you! do i have to be part of my school’s tap program to do it though? bc i don’t think i can do it then if i have to be
@justinmega1 maybe it’s dependent on the major? idk about ucsd but looking at the transfer stats thread for ucla from last year, most of the acceptances were really dependent on major. many people with 3.8+ were rejected bc they had an impacted major while many people who applied for non-impacted majors were admitted even with gpa’s around 3.5. but that’s what i observed for ucla, idk about ucsd.
Got a question about the TAP program. So do the majority of the people get in through TAP? In other words, how much does it help you? I ask bc by the time I got into my honors program, I completed all my GE courses and most of my units done. So rn I am only a part time student taking major prep courses. Now, my school does not offer some of these courses that come in my way. Because of all of this, I can’t really participate in TAP. I have like a 3.4 with all my major prep and GE’s done for a very impacted major. I have only done 1 honor class (english honors) in which I got an A in the class. Am I at a disadvantage w/ out having done tap?
@cmdchavezz No, for TAG you just have to fill out the planner and submit the application on the link I sent you. You don’t have to be apart of any other program.
@Rshah123 TAP can only help you (it doesn’t hurt you if you haven’t done it). It definitely helps borderline candidates because they get to be reviewed by their alternate major if they don’t get accepted for their original one as well as priority consideration for enrollment. If you have major prep to finish I would definitely focus on that, that is more important (not finishing major prep CAN hurt you). But also if you do have the chance to complete it I would, at my CC the stats for it were like it takes your 20% chance of getting in and turns it into an 80-90% chance. That’s what sold me, I don’t know what it’s like at other CCs though. Good luck!
Hey Guys,
got a question. Are you in better standing if you have completed your major prep BEFORE applying or is it better to have the classes IP.
I would imagine if you did well in those classes and did em before applying you are in better standing. But I dont know if you are in better standing if you did poorly in those classes vs some one who is planning to take those classes. By poorly I mean C or W/ FAil and retake for like a B or something.
Any thoughts would be appreciated
@Rshah123 From my understanding of things, there may not be a significant difference between the two situations, though there are a lot of schools that recommend you apply before you finish your major prep, as long as you will have finished the needed classes by the end of the following spring (if you have applied in the fall). If you don’t have a great track record so far with your major prep I would recommend you try and improve your grades in the rest of your major prep and then apply so that these schools can see an upward trend. Where as if you apply, with a bad track record, even if you improve your grades this semester and next, they may not get the chance to completely see your upwards trend. This is of course assuming you may not have the best record.
OK, so again with my GPA, I just inputted all my coursework into the Transfers Admission Planner.
Assist certified courses: 4.0
Non-Assist certified courses: 2.2
Overall: 3.2
Will they look at my assist certified gpa, aka my gpa at my cc, or will they just focus on my overall gpa??
ALSO, i have a question. I have credit from CSUF for a calculus course, but when i put it on tap, I had to manually put it in, so in the end it didn’t count as a math course for my igetc. But at my cc, i already had a form filled out that the credit does indeed meet the igetc requirements. So should I be worried? What should I do?
@cmdchavezz Even though they see the overall GPA, they go by your UC GPA (transferable units). I would ask a counselor about the math class because I know some CSU courses don’t transfer, better to be safe than sorry.
is our major gpa only the classes in our major? or is it all of the classes listed on assist for our major? im a physics major yet there are chemistry and math classes on assist and im just wondering if those count into it.
@ericeo idk but I really feel like they do factor in that because the earlier you have it the more they see out of you. By having the courses IP/Planned they can’t really determine what you will get in those classes. So nothing is guaranteed that you will do bad or do good but things can happen. Etc. Fail C ,W, B. And something also tells me that they dont like taking their chances. Of course, if it’s an easy class it won’t matter much. Additionally, like people have these high GPA’s while they haven’t taken the hard classes so I don’t really think that’s fair to the people who haven’t been waiting and didn’t do well. Then again, none of this is actually fair as grades say nothing about you or what you can do. Really, it mostly depends on the teacher and grading rubric
Now regarding my situation, I am an economics major and I did not do very good and calc 1 & calc 2. I took AB Calculus in high school but I did not get units for that class. (Missed the AP test). But anyways, I did receive a better grade in that class than I did for my college classes.
In addition, I did have the same teacher for CALC 1 & 2
I actually did better in CALC 2 but I failed my final because I took other finals that day and I guess I tested for to long
But aside from this, If I do better in CALC 3, and explain my situation will that do great help for me?
^^ but calc 3 isnt a “major” class for UCLA Econ
@otoribashi I believe it’s what is on assist.
@Rshah123 In your situation, that may be best. If you improve in Calc 3 it’ll show them that you can handle the material very well, and it’ll also give you the chance to prove to them that your grades in Calc 1 & 2 weren’t completely reflective of your math capabilities.
