What do you guys think are my chances of getting in? I just started working on my personal statements. I have 2 Bs on my transcript which is really worrying me One of the Bs I got was for Chemistry which I took in the Spring semester, and I changed my major so I no longer needed to take it anymore. But it was too late to drop. The other B I got when I took Calc 2 over the summer, which was a darn intense and hard course. And I took this course along with 3 other online courses over the summer, so basically I took 14 units during the summer.
@Rosedarling123 Your GPA’s over 0.1 higher than the 25th percentile for admits; I don’t need to explain to a stats major that you have a good chance by definition Good luck!
I just got an email from Phi Theta Kappa inviting me to the program. Membership is $80, though. Is it worth the cost? Will it help me on my UCLA application? Especially bc I’m not in my school’s honor program, so would it be worth the money?
@justinmega1 Don’t get discouraged Justin because I think your ECs are great. I happen to work part time for my dad doing serious work like preparing his contracts and invoices so I can only begin to imagine how stressful your situation has been; you’ve shown tremendous responsibility and determination by supporting your family while your dad’s unemployed and your GPA isn’t all that bad.
Also, you’re going to have some powerful essays due to your life experiences and you have TAP which will also help. Since you have TAP why don’t you just pick an alternate major like physics or applied math that has a much higher acceptance rate? I’d honestly be surprised if you didn’t get in for at least your alt major because I’d want you at my university if I was on the admission committee.
I mean let’s be real here: there’s joining clubs and working part time on the one hand (like most of us have done) then there’s doing research, serving in the army or supporting your family financially on the other. You have a powerful excuse for that relatively low GPA
@cmdchavezz PTK helps with scholarships and looks good on applications. I just got one too. I might just pay the 80 so I can write it on my application, but I’m also trying to save up for the $70 per application. Haha this process is taking all my money! :((
@ericeo I already know I don’t qualify, but I believe it comes when you submit your application and it’s time to pay per school, if you qualify, it will subtract it from the amount you pay. Just make sure you fill in the household income part of the application to be eligible.
Looking to transfer Fall 17

Just wanted to see if I have a competitive resume.
Also if anyones resume was similar to mine and was admitted I would like to here some tips.
Thank you and goodluck to everyone
This is irrelevant to this particular thread, but I figured you folk would know. Regarding the TAG application, what happens if I’ll only have two courses (taken in the summer) fully completed by Sept. 30? Will whichever school I TAG to check back in later to see what grades I’ve gotten this fall semester?
TOTALLY DISREGARD THAT LAST POST. Lol, I should’ve read into the TAG before asking that. I can’t apply because I’ll be 5 units off the 30 required to submit. Good luck to all!
International student here looking to transfer Fall 17. Currently studying in a New York Community college.
Major: Ecology, evolution and behavior
CC GPA: 3.8
Major GPA: 3.9
Major Prep: Done by Spring
EC’s:
-Finance Committee one academic year
-Europeans club secretary one academic year
-Presidents List since first semester
-Peruvians club vicepresident one semester
-Fully scholarship program for one academic year
What do you guys think? Got a chance? I know UCs are very strict when it comes to out of state students…
Thanks!
Also I would talk to as many counselors as possible to make sure that all of your courses match the major prereqs required by UCLA; CCC kids are at an advantage there because we can just look at assist.org. Good luck!
Major: Computer Science
Overall GPA: 3.95 (got a B in art history)
Major GPA: 4.0
Completed courses: Cal 1 and Cal 2, (currently doing Cal 3), linear algebra, differential equation, doing the second English course this semester, Physics with Mechanics, doing electromagnetism this semester(also physics)
Major courses: C, C++, Java, C++ data structure, Assembly language, computer architecture
Courses that will be done before the end of the Spring: Chem(only one course), physics with waves, Discrete Structures
There’re other courses I took like econ or music which I do not think is necessary to list here.
EC’s:
CS tutor for 2 semesters (plus this fall)
Programming Club (since spring)
internship in a foreign company (learning stuff like SQL and HTML Scraping)
I’m international student(IDK if it will affect my application or not), and I’m mainly targeting UCLA. I noticed that the admitted rate of getting into UCLA is even lower than getting into UC Berkeley(probably because in Berkeley you are still undeclared), and also I live in LA right now, so UCLA is probably the best choice for me.
I’m just not confident enough cuz UCLA only got like 33 people admitted and my EC is relatively weak (maybe comparing to people who have similar GPA but more outgoing)
So my first question is: is EC really matter?
My second question is: Do I need to complete all pre-req technically?
My third question is: Am I at a disadvantage because I am an international student? Will the judges put my application after residents?
@Chronus I know of computer science students who got rejected last year with 4.00s, most likely because they didn’t have their major prereqs completed. If you can’t get all the prereqs completed by spring I’d recommend applying as an applied math major instead; I’ve met at least two representatives from UCLA at college fairs that have made similar suggestions to engineering/comp sci students without prereqs.
@Chronus 1st ques: It depends, if you’re maybe a borderline candidate the ECs and personal statement could be the tipping point of getting you in (especially Berkeley). I know at UCSD, they focus highly on GPA as a deciding factor, but for UCLA it’s hard to pin point cause every year seems like a different batch.
2nd ques: With Computer Science, because it’s such an impacted major I suggest getting pre-reqs done AND you’re an international student. Dude try and get them done, it can only help you.
3rd ques: The honest truth, yes. “We give highest priority to students who are transferring from California community colleges or other University of California campuses.” - That’s from UCLA’s website.
Here are the stats and pretty much order of priority for 2016 admissions (scroll down to the bottom to see the breakdown): https://www.admission.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof16.htm
This shouldn’t deter you though. You have a high GPA and, like I said before, no one really knows how it’s going to go. Hope this helped, good luck!
