Hello everyone,
I have a question regarding the 60 semester units/90 quarter units to transfer as a junior.
I have 18.67 semester/28 quarter units from AP classes, and should be completed with about 46 semester/69 units by this spring at my community college. That’s 64.67 semester/97 quarter units in total, so I should be good right?
Looking at other people’s amazing gpa Is making me panic!
Major: chemistry B.S
Alt Major: anthropology B.A
Overall gpa: 3.51
Major gpa: 3.1 ( It’s really bad!!)
TAP certified
Extracurricular:
-volunteer at a hospital
-part of alpha gamma signs honors society
-part of of scholars program.
Both my overall and especially my major gpa are really bad, so do I have any small chance to get in with a major in chemistry (2015’s chemistry admits gpa were between a 3.48-3.88). I do not want to be admitted with my alt major.
out of state transferring as a sophomore in fall 2017?
gpa: 3.7
major: biomedical sciences and switching to computers science
Experience:
-none really
-currently learning python
-have more medical experience than computer science experience but trying
want to apply to ucsb, uci, and ucla
do i have enough credits? have about 26 from dual enrollment (not sure if uc’s will take them), taking 15 right now in my first semester of sophomore year, and will take 15 next semester
Alright guys so update i got a 47% on my first physics test and i have a 60% in the class. And in my calculous 3 i got a 81% on the test im assuming my grade is a B in that class. My other 2 classes are A’s. Lol idk if anyone cares just thought id post an update.
@DaveUC I’m sure you have a chance; why is your major GPA so low if you don’t mind me askin’?
@tiastratton I don’t think you have the best chance (or even a chance), in large part because from what I’ve read most UC campuses and majors (UCLA being no exception) require 60 units prior to transferring and only admit junior level transfers. Also, the computer science major at UCLA is extremely competitive; you really need to have both a high GPA and to have most or all of the major prerequisite courses completed. I could recommend applying to a related but less impacted major like applied math or something.
@Deangeloyouknow I care xD That physics class sounds hard; I haven’t taken physics yet myself (I’ll be taking mechanics this spring). Does he curve the exams? Calculus III is a hard class as well relative to the other courses you can take at this level; I know that from experience.
Looking to transfer Fall 17

Target schools: Stanford, Berkeley, UCLA, USC.
Just wanted to see if I have a competitive resume.
Also if anyone’s resume was similar to mine and was admitted I would like to hear some tips.
Thank you and good luck to everyone
@mightyMETA thanks for relieving some of my anxiety. To answer your question, I received an A in chem 1 and o chem 2; however, I received a C in calculus 2 (my only C). The rest of my other major prep courses I have a B in which add up to a 3.1. So most of my mess ups in grades are all from my major courses… I can still raise it to a 3.2 “if” I get an A in physics 1…
@DaveUC Ah I see, yea I think you have a good shot; good luck!
@Orlando1997 You have a good chance at UCLA’s econ but I have no idea about how Stanford’s transfer admission works
Can you kind people chance me?

I met with a UCLA admission counselor And they said my GPA is right on the boarder with the competitive GPA. They told me if I can raise up my GPA a little bit I will stand a good chance of acceptance. They told me to use I statements when writing my personal insight questions. Its okay to write about your role models but remember to bring it back to yourself at the end of the essay. Honestly I thought I was like they’re just gonna tell me i’m not competitive and apply somewhere else, but i’m very excited about my chances now!
@Deangeloyouknow How did you meet with an admissions counselor? Did you just go to the admissions office and asked?
@Ohm888 @LynAmmo Thank you for the advice! I ended up taking it for a grade just to be on the safe side. I’m trying to be extra on top of everything this semester so hopefully it won’t be too overwhelming…
@mightyMETA I went in to see a few different counselors about it recently but they basically told me they didn’t know. I’m not sure if I just got a few counselors who were unfamiliar with UCLA admissions or if its still just something that’s hard to know. I’m still just hoping that means it doesn’t matter at all :-/
Hello my fellow students :-h
I’m always stalking these threads (so much good info on here), but I finally have a question of my own to ask. Could I get some opinions on my situation? I’ll try to keep it in a nutshell cause I know long posts can be annoying to read. Basically, I’m at a CCC right now and am applying to transfer Fall 2017 to UCLA, UCSD, UCB and UCSB. I’ve just recently decided to change my major (at least for a few of the schools I’m applying to, like UCLA), from biology to anthropology (BA not BS), I won’t really go into why to keep this short. Anyway, the BA Anthropology major at UCLA only requires like 3 anthro classes, all which I could easily complete this Spring 2017 semester (my last semester at CC). My GPA is 3.94 right now, and everything else on my app should be pretty solid (IGETC completed this semester, good PS, decent ECs). So my question is, since I know major Pre-reqs are a huge huge deal with the UCs, how bad would it look that I took all of my lower division reqs (those 3 anthro courses) in my very last semester at CC? Would it look really bad? Do they care? Or as long as it’s done by spring, it’s not a big deal at all? I just feel like it would look kind of weird to them that I did all the pre-reqs in the last semester, but I keep reading from threads that they just care that it’s done by spring. Would UCLA and UCB care more than the other schools? Any advice or comments are welcome! Thanks for taking the time to read my long post that I tried to make short haha.
@junemoon I would just explain (in one of your essays or the additional sections) why you’ll be doing them your last semester at you CCC. If you do that I think you’ll be fine.
@ericeo Thanks for the advice! I hadn’t thought of that. One more thing… wouldn’t this mean my “Major GPA” would be N/A? Since I won’t have any pre-req grades to report? How bad would you guess that would look?
@junemoon
I do think it matters. You will have no classes completed for the major, so they have no basis on which to decide if you have interest in the major or if it’s a good fit. Classes take. In Spring count of course, but the admissions decisions are based on your grades through Fall. If there are 3 prerequisites and you completed even 1, I think your chances would be significany better than 0. If there’s any way you could take 1 this semester or even in Winter, you should. Find a class online that starts mid semester.
@2016Candles Thank you for your honesty. I was thinking the same thing but just wanted to put it out there for any advice or opinions. I’m going to keep my options open and see what I can do.
@junemoon I guess that would be an issue having no classes to calculate your major GPA. I would even trying emailing someone in their admissions office, they might have some advice for you.
@junemoon i don’t know if it would be that bad. First off, anthro has very few course req (I assume one is intro to anthro - very easy), and you were planning on bio, and still are for some UCs. Your GPA is very strong in a tough major with a lot of science courses (bio). I think you will be ok. Simply note, as someone mentioned above, to put in your additional comments that you changed to anthro at a couple of UCs at the last minute. I know UCLA has an especially long list of bio req. I think they will get it totally - and isn’t there an anthro with bio specialty? The worst that most likely could happen is they will put a grade req on those 3 anthro courses in your provisional. The reason they want some major req completed in advance is to determine that you have the aptitude - and you’ve shown that with the bio courses and GPA. This is just my opinion, of course, but I personally don’t really see it as an issue.
