I graduated a few months ago and have a job but I want to try something else and am thinking about going to the career fair. My friend told me career fairs were basically a way for companies to advertise themselves and most of them just tell you to apply online. I'm not sure how true that is and was planning on going anyway, but has anyone gone to the career fair? What was your experience like and was it positive and worthwhile? Thanks.

What do you have to lose? $20 for an alumni to attend and easy access to make an impression on hiring personnel at companies that like to recruit from UMich.

Do define “worthwhile”
Seems like a no-brainer to me.

Fall career fair has already happened though… There will be another in Winter.

What your friend said is mostly true, but some recruiters at some companies do schedule for interviews on the spot. Not common, but happens.

Yeah you missed career fair

If you are an attractive enough candidate, giving them your resume can lead directly to an interview. You may get scheduled on the spot or called later. I don’t think it is super uncommon. I had it happen a good amount this year.

Actually, I think there’s also a math career fair in November sometime, if you were a math or other quant major.

You never said what major you were and my engineering brain defaulted to something engineering. What career fair were you thinking of?

Thanks for the responses so far. I’m talking about the fall career expo on Oct 1 and 2. I know that the engineering career fair is a bigger deal, though.
