Fall semester classes...2 Q's

At my community college…

Calculus 1 (103) - 5 units
Spanish 101 - 5 units
English 101 - 3 units

And I might add Geography 101 - 3 units because my friends said that I don’t have enough classes

Oh and Music 120 online

1.Is this too much to maintain a 4.0?

To those of you who have maintained 4.0s, did you coast through the basic classes such as geography, sociology, philosophy etc? What I mean is that I have not put much effort in my class but I still expect to get an A (I do worry sometimes)…I feel with the good ratings and the book not being needed I won’t have to put too much effort…did most of you still read every night, review etc?

Thanks

EDIT: One more thing do you advise me to take Calculus first or Statistics?

Sorry: another thing, the english professor I have expects a lot of hard work but is a good professor, and people say they learned a lot…but I don’t want to risk my A. The other professor I can choose hands out A’s but people say she is a good professor. Which to take?

You may want to reconsider the English class unless you know how to write college essays because you'll be expected to do so in 4-year institutions.

I second beardy regarding the English class. My English comp teacher advised everyone to take a few other courses, especially in humanities (although I found social and physical science courses to be helpful too), before university level English comp. The reason? Have more topic choices that you already know, expand your vocabulary, and get a bit more essay writing practice. I would wait one semester - take a geography, philosophy, sociology, arts history, other history, or similar class this semester, then take the harder English professor in the Spring.

In regards to "coasting" through a class like Geography 101 (I assume that is physical geography?), it depends on you and your interests. I found my physical geography class to be fairly easy, but my interest level is high. I don't think I coasted through it, I did have to study, but because I was already interested in physical science the concepts of atmosphere, erosion, topography, etc. were already formed in my mind. There were several other students who could not grasp the material, and therefore didn't do so well. I would not say these students were lazy or poor students - I would say they were easily A students in other classes.

For all classes except Plant Biology, English, and Women's History I hardly studied at all, even though I read every textbook/article that was required and made sure to take good notes. Certainly I did not study 3 hours for every credit unit each week as CCC counselors recommend!

Depending on the Stats class you want to take, Calculus might actually be a pre-req.

Take calculus in the fall so you can take statistics in the winter.
Statistics is an easy enough class.
