FAQ for USC Admissions

flloyd,
You don’t need to do anything. When you submit the app, the computer will give it a timestamp so USC knows when you submitted it. Everything you send will have a postmark or fax timestamp. As alamemom said thousands of times, as long as you submitted you app by 12/1 and everything else (test scores, transcript, etc) gets there shortly after (like a few days), you are fine.

Sorry if this has already been asked by someone else. I submitted my application by the scholarship deadline. What time should I be expecting a decision? January? April?

ophelia, check post #10 of THIS thread.

Do we have to have the teachers/counselors send the letters of rec and report, or can they give them back and we send them?
And if I want to get one letter of rec from my counselor and one from a teacher, do I give both of them a counselor/teacher report (form 4)? I’m confused.

As long as the recommendations are sealed, they can be sent either way. Provide your recommenders with a stamped envelope adressed to USC admissions. If they give them to you, send them in with any other materials you are sending.

Yes, you can submit two (or more) recommendations and printing out two (or more) of the recommendation form is the correct way. Be sure your USC ID appears on the form (or if you do not have your USC ID, use your social security number or birthdate).

Thanks for the reply
But what is the recommendation form, is it the same thing as the counselor/teache report? So when I want a recommendation from someone I give them the counselor/teacher report and they fill it out and also write a letter?

^Exactly!

Print out the Counselor/Teacher Report. Fill out your information, including USC ID# (or ssn or birthdate) in the top right corner. Give it to your recommender. They fill out the form and attached a letter of recommendation. They may send it themselves, or return to you to send in. Repeat all the above for additional recommenders.

does anyone have the link for stats of last year’s accepted/rejected applicants? i just got rejected from NYU. : / but USC was originally my dream school. lol

Here is the 2009 decisions thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/642272-stats-only-usc-decisons-2009-a.html</a> Just remember that the cc posters tend to be a bit more qualified than the average student.

You can check the 2009 freshman profile to see the averages of all accepted students. Good luck! http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/private/0910/FreshmanProfile2009.pdf</a></p>

I love USC, number school in the world, i visited your campus, it is lovely!!! Do they consider your personal essay alot in your application, and how about if you are a california resident
Thanks
future usc student

^ your essay weighs a lot in their review for sure. i don’t think residency matters that much since it’s a private school, but 50% of usc freshmen last year were cal residents, so the correlation might suggest some sort of association? (if no big lurking variables of course) well I could be wrong, just taking my best guess as a 2014hopeful…

thanks mimizist

My question has to do with Naviance and USC. My understanding is that Naviance interfaces with the common app and needs the submission of the common app to trigger the release of uploaded teacher recs, transcript etc. But S’s high school is telling S “Don’t worry about those USC forms. We don’t need to fill them out. We send your stuff in electronically.” But as you all know, USC does not use the common app, so just how does the stuff go to USC electronically? What drives me nuts is that the high school just sits there and waits for each family to get really confused about this and for each kid to bring in those forms before they say “don’t worry, we got you covered.”

Time for some schnapps in my hot chocolate . . .

I asked my counselor for a letter of rec 2 weeks ago but she refused because it was too late. So I won’t have a counselor report or letter of rec from my counselor. I’ll just have one rec from a teacher. Will this hurt my application and admission chances?

Abdallah – If your counselor has already written a letter about you for other schools, perhaps if you gave her an envelope addressed to USC with deep apologies for having asked her after your school’s deadline (I assume it’s after your school’s deadline; otherwise, it’s hard to explain her refusal.), she’ll be willing to print it up and put it in the envelope. Even though this wouldn’t be on a USC form, it would certainly be better than nothing. Also, if you’ve tried your best and just met with refusal, if your parents have a good relationship with the counselor, perhaps they could gently intervene? Finally, if you can’t obtain the counselor rec, are you able to increase the number of teacher recs you send? If you know your princ. or vice-princ, might they be willing to send something equivalent to the counselor rec for you? Good luck!

Abdallah,
I am pretty sure that USC requires only one Counselor/Teacher Report/LOR. See Form 4
[Freshmen - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/freshmen.html)

If your teacher already did one, then sending one from your counselor is optional. An optional one might help if it is good. Given your counselor doesn’t want to do one, perhaps you shouldn’t push it.

hey i applied for usc dec 10 and did both the part 1 and 2 of the application. when i applied, there was a section where i entered my counselors email and phone number and etc to verrify that i cannot pay the app fee bc im poor basically. Well i looked on the usc website and it says that my counselor had to write a letter stating that im poor and stuff and my counselor said that she never got a call from usc. I have called but the office is out for winter break T_T Should i send the app fee now? and if so, do i pay for pt 1 and pt 2 or just pt 2 only?

hiilikeyoux3, the regular application deadline is January 11th, so you still have time for your counselor to send the required information. [Dates & Deadlines - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/apply/dates_deadlines.html)

Kind-of the same thing for me, I need a fee waiver, and so i applied for one. I gave them my counselor’s e-mail and phone # and my counselor says she hasn’t gotten anything from them yet.

However, on the website it doesn’t say anything about requiring a fee, it says it’s being reviewed currently, did they just assume, or can i assume my counselor maybe did do it already and just forgot in the midst of all the college crap she has to deal with for an entire student body?

The only other possible thing is that i sent them an ACT I used a fee waiver for. Is that recorded on the score report or something? I know a lot of colleges just request an ACT/SAT fee waiver to show that you need the app fee waiver, but I’m still not really sure what I should do. I’m going to include the question once I get back in school and send them a letter with my latest ACT/Schedule change/7th semester grades.

FAX that great ACT score TODAY. Ask about the fee waiver in an email - there is a contact form here: [Campus Life - USC Undergraduate Admission](http://www.usc.edu/admission/undergraduate/contact/contactus.html) Include your Name and USC ID#

A letter is fine for the schedule change and mid-term grades, though you can also report your grades online.
