Farmer vs. Kelley

My son has been accepted into IU and Miami U., but not direct admit into Kelly or Farmer. Any experiences on the difficulty level of hitting the requirements for transfer within those universities or knowledge of the % of kids that are successful in either schools? Trying to assess the difficulty of the 3.5 GPA requirement at Farmer.

@wildcat1967 I’m of no help with your question, sorry. But if you don’t mind, how did your son hear of his admission so early? Snail Mail?

yeah the earliest you find out 12/15 at miami

I typed too fast. He was accepted at IU, first on-line then via mail. Miami is still pending.

As I have both a daughter at Kelly and a son at Farmer - I thought I could reply to this post. Both Kelly and Farmer are excellent business schools. Both of my kids were direct admits - and I do want to warn you that it is VERY difficult to achieve the required GPA as a freshman (especially when you are required to take the Calc, Finite Math and Econ classes) your freshman year before even applying for admission consideration at the end of freshman year. Many try - few make it. It is not impossible - but keep in mind all of the transitions they go through freshman year. So I guess - it really depends on your son - if he plans to forgo rushing a frat his freshman year (fall for IU, Spring for MU) then his chances are higher, as that can really affect his grades.

But the classes I mentioned above all have a C average (at both schools) for a reason - they are used as serious weeder classes to limit the number of students who gain admission to the business schools as sophomores. I will say that as an resident from a different state- the out of state tuition for both IU and MU would not have been considered if I didn’t think they were getting the business degree - but I don’t know your state residency. I can not tell you the % of those who apply - make it into Farmer - but I am sure that someone at Farmer/Miami can assist you. I have been REALY impressed with Miami’s response and assistance. Also, Miami (unlike Kelly) offers FREE, weekly 1 on 1 tutoring sessions (which you schedule in advance - so they are automatically recurring) for the Math 151 (killer 5 credit Calc class) and ECON 201 (Micro) required freshman classes - which helps a lot. He used a calc tutor all semester and would not have made it otherwise. It was great! I believe IU only offers general Math Help sessions - a few evenings per week - but my daughter felt they were useless - as they were usually run by a TA who answered general questions from the audience.

My suggestion for you is to have your son consider look into taking the CALC or ECON 201 class during the summer and transferring the credits in. That way - the credits (and requirement) transfer - but NOT the grade - so his GPA would not take a hit and he would get one of them out of the way. It is a hard decision - but both are fantastic! Good luck to your son…!

Centerport - thank you very much, very helpful.

wildcat1967 - You are most welcome. Best of luck to your son!
