Hello everyone. I am aware that there was a previous post done on this topic, but my hope is to develop a more comprehensive page. As a southern Californian, my wardrobe consists of a large variety of dresses, two pairs of jeans and shorts – obviously, or weather is more than temperate. Fall and winter, for me at least, consist of recycling the same dresses with tights.
Can anyone answer clothing questions along these lines?

a. In the spring, what do students wear to class?
b. Are dresses to class viewed as “fancy”?
c. In the fall, are sweaters and polo shirts worn? If so, how many do students own?
d. Are jeans an essential? How many pairs do students own? And what about trousers?
e. Are peacoats like this http://www.armynavysuperstores.com/womensgraypeacoat.jpg essential?
*f. * Are boots of any sort needed?

Thanks.

I am a parent of a girl. From my quick trips to campus, I can tell you most kids of both sexes wear jeans and hoodies. I saw a couple of girls in skirts during spring preview day in April 2010.

My daughter does not have a lot of clothes relative to other students. 4-5 pairs of jeans, 5-6 hoodies, various t-shirts and tops, a couple pair of leggings, and maybe 2 skirts and a sundress. The friends of hers that I met seem to dress similarly.

Her dorm room did not have a full closet, but rather an armoire, so there was not a lot of space for clothing

The weather will be very different than southern california. Up through finals in May, it was often still in the 60’s and raining regularly. We ended up buying rain boots and a couple pairs of the fleece lined style boots during Parents Weekend in October.

I don’t recall seeing any polo shirts, but again, I was there only a few times, and then only briefly. The vibe I get is that you could wear whatever you are comfortable in and it won’t be a problem. It is a friendly, tolerant campus.

Thanks, that was very helpful. I know you’ve mentioned hoodies, but are these worn during the winter, or do students turn to coats instead?
I am trying to by fall/winter clothing on sale right now - it’s all 60%+ off.

You will want a warmer coat for the winter months. Willamette did have a couple of snowy days, and it does get chilly in the evenings, especially when it gets dark so early. My daughter insisted she did not need a rain coat, as they are for sissies. She has sinced asked if we could get her one before she goes back in August. ;)

She layered; a long sleeved tee, a hoodie and a down vest. A pea coat is not her style. She did say those North Face jackets seem to be popular.

Good luck with your shopping.

I’m going to be in next year’s freshman class too, but I’m from Portland so I know about the weather/fashion in northern Oregon. Hoodies are very popular, but more during the fall and spring. Raincoats are definitely a must have, even for true Oregonians (umbrellas on the other hand may get you mocked). Pea coats are definitely not a necessity, but they’re in style right now (for winter) so a lot of people do have them/will be wearing them.

For me and most of the people I know, jeans are a necessity, but, if you’re more comfortable in dresses and leggings, that works too. I have a few friends who rarely wear pants and they manage to survive winter in tights and coats, so I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

Hope this all helps! Let me know if you have other questions!

Personally, I love sweaters so I wear them a lot, but it’s not a huge trend. Polo shirts aren’t very popular and tend to be associated with lax bros (although since you’re a girl, this isn’t really an issue), so I wouldn’t buy any.

Rain boots are cheap, cute, and definitely useful, but they’re not a must-have unless most of your shoes would be destroyed in the rain.

And if your dresses weren’t too fancy at your high school I’m guessing they won’t be here.

Thanks again. Fast question about footwear - do women wear sneakers, boots, or ballet flats thorughout the year?

Hey, you should check this out; seems really useful!:

Toms are really popular, as are vans/knock-off vans, but I would say people wear flats almost as much. Boots aren’t seen quite as much, but still are fairly common in terms of footwear. I don’t see a lot of people wearing tennis shoes on a regular basis, if that’s what you meant by sneakers. Hope that helps!
