I'm applying to FIT next year for FMM or Entrepreneurship. My G.P.A is a 3.1 and ACT is 21. So far I've had 2 internships in clothing stores. Do you think I could get in and what else can I do to improve my chances????? Please help.

P.S it’s impossible to bring my gpa up before I apply.

Hi! I’m going to FIT for FMM in the fall, but I learned a lot from admissions and actually getting into the school so I hope this post will help you!

First off, are you starting as a freshman? If so, you can only apply to four majors within the business school. These majors are for an associates degree, so their curriculum would have to be completed before applying to a bachelor’s program like Entrepreneurship. They are: Advertising & Marketing Communications, Fashion Merchandising, Textile Development & Marketing, and Production Management. After you complete that program after two years, you will receive an associates degree and then earn a bachelor’s within another two years. It’s actually EXTREMELY beneficial because you will have two different degrees within four years. It’s a big advantage and shows diversity and broadness within such a competitive industry. I advise you to apply for the two-year AAS FMM program and then two-year Bachelor’s in Entrepreneurship.

Anything over a 3.0 should put you in a decent standing for FMM. I must emphasize that math is extremely important for FMM. I hate to sound cruel, but do not expect a seat in FMM when you can’t pass geometry- they will not admit you because you seriously will struggle in important and necessary classes. If you scored high 80s+ in math you should be fine. It is also expected that in senior year, all FMM applicants should have reached an algebra II/trigonometry course. It is just important to see that you can work well with problem solving and numbers. FMM is a very math-based and number crunching major. If you don’t like math or struggle with it, I would stay away from FMM. If you prefer to write than solve equations, I would suggest AMC. I do not think it matters what major you choose for your associates to enter Entrepreneurship. It must be within the business school but I do not see that as a problem for you.

Any prior work experience to college is very significant and can get your foot in the door. It sounds very impressive! Just talk about what you did in your essays, talk about your goals, and most importantly, why you chose FMM. If you can relate your work to the major and school it is a BIG help and truly does show genuine interest. The essay is VERY important and can reserve you a seat even if your academic standing is lower than average. Outline your essay. Draft it out and keep revising it. The prompt should be up online. To my knowing, it does not change. Just don’t write things to do not relate to FMM. For example, don’t elaborate on how you want to model or become a stylist- you will NOT get in. You go to FIT to work in a competitive atmosphere, not to dress in designer and pose for a camera.

Also, a side note, thankfully FIT does NOT look at standardized testing unless you applied to their honors program. It is a very tiny program that accepts only fifty students each year. Yes, study and do your best on the ACT but it’s not the end of the world if you scored poorly. You’re going to have to apply to other schools, right? Just to give you an idea, I had a 3.8 W GPA, 1050 CR+M, 1590 CR+M+W SAT. Lots of ECs and service hours. Thank goodness I got in, phew!
