Fashion Merchandising Management or Advertising and Marketing Communications?

hi everyone, I just got accepted in FIT for Fashion Merchandising Management, and I am SO EXCITED to be a part of this school!!!! At this time last year I was still in Macau, thinking that it's impossible for me to go to America in my senior year and get in FIT!

However, as I grew older, I've also become more realistic...I have learnt that in order to be in the fashion industry, you dont exactly need a Fashion Merchandising degree. A degree for Marketing would do and conversely, a degree in fashion merchandising won't exactly get u a lot of job opportunities. I guess that's also a lot of people's concern too since the economy is in a slump right now.

I applied for FMM but now I am also looking at the programs for Advertising and Marketing Communications... I might consider changing my major to AMC. Can anyone PLEASE tell me if its the right move? I know that FMM program in FIT is prestigious, but is it as highly selective as the fashion design program? and is the AMC program just as good? 'cause really, I am just as interested in it. I've applied to other regular colleges (including Fordham College, whose campus is in Manhattan)...Would it be better for me to go there??

And is an AMC degree in a fashion school like FIT as highly reguarded as a Marketing degree from other universities? (say, not only in the fashion industry)

I've also thought about doing a 2 year associate program in FMM and then achieve a BA in AMC, does that mean I would have the best of both worlds??

last question, does FIT offer part-time jobs for international students in order to help pay the tuition? I'm from a middle-class family and I really don't want my parents to pay full tuition for something that they don't really want me to do.

PLEASE help me out!!!!! I really appreciate your help!!

I have a LOT of similar problems like you. I’m also an international student.

Okay let’s start from here:
What do you WANT to do? As a career? FMM is for people who want to be buyers or work as merchandisers or anything in that director. Communications is for advertising, PR, magazines, etc. So they’re very different and you need to know what exactly you’re wanting to do. FMM for example, involves tons of math and communications, lots of writing! FMM is highly prestigious because FIT is the best program in NY for fashion merchandising. I’m not sure what the rep of communications is but I’m sure it’s great as well.
Also, you can’t do an AAS in FMM and then do a BA in AMC. You have to pick the same course, it’s the FIT rule.

Hope this helped! I’m sure you’ll do fantastic.

Hello PRgirlyNY,

I read you msg on the forum and saw that you were an international student and I am one to. I just want to know if you sent your files to the WES and if they were late? Also did yo sent all your required documents before the deadline or after. I did everything that I could possibly do to rush it all but I am now scared of the WES being the one who causes a delay. I applied for an advertising and marketing communication major if this can help.

I really hope you’ll be able to help me. Thank you.

Actually, you can do an AAS for FMM and then do AMC for BS. But you have to take all the pre-requistes for AMC during AAS. You can find it on the FIT page.
