Sorry, @anomander, but no single item can exceed $50. That’s the rule on his side of the closet.
Also, I’ll make a plug for the decent clothing at Sam’s and/or Costco for guys that are cheap. A look can be quickly refreshed without spending a fortune.
I lived for the Glamour do’s and don’ts every month.
Fast fashion - Shein. No. No. No. I’ve learned a lot about it in the past year, mostly from Cora Harrington’s posts and discussions (lingerie_addict on twitter). Cheap, shabby, and perpetuating poverty-level wages. Computers and machines don’t make clothes, people do.
My rule of thumb is if it was a fashion/trend worn in my youth, I don’t wear it again. See: farmer girl dresses, crocheted granny square vests, embroidered denim jackets, etc. There are tops/blouses out there now that are dead ringers for some my grandma (b. 1896) sewed and wore. Big nope.
I can’t wear boot cut jeans and pants because my legs are short and the required tailoring would bankrupt me. Dresses with a defined waistline are tough because I have a disproportionately long torso.
General mistakes are the ill-fitting undergarments, baggy, shapeless stuff, shirts that don’t fit at the shoulders or are too tight across the bust.
I have to say that right now I’m a fashion don’t. Covid and stress-related weight gain and a lot of ugly (on me) colors and styles. The mastectomy in June and not-too-filled expanders have me in bralettes for the first time & I’m loving it, but I can’t wear tight or light-colored tops. I have to lose pounds so I can have reconstruction and it’s killing me.
Husband actually already owns several nicer shirts, he just doesn’t choose to take them on vacation because it’s “casual.” I will be doing more management of packing on our next few trips.
I read a blurb somewhere recently that there are concerning levels of lead in the Shein clothing. I’ve told my D no more Shein.
Wow, I had never heard of Shein. In the spirit of “you get what you pay for,” I wouldn’t buy from them, unless it were for – nothing I can think of off-hand.
A short podcast on shein. I wouldn’t buy shein, I try not to buy fast fashion clothing from Amazon either
I don’t think it should be behind a paywall, I listen to post reports on the Apple podcast app
showmom858 - I follow this YouTuber - she has great advice about make-up and skin care. I started following her when I was geating ready for a professional headshot recently and have kept some of the techniques (concealer with a make-up sponge is one). HotandFlashy - YouTube
Jo Lynne Shane has been blogging about 2022 trends and it’s been very helpful. At least to me
I stopped coloring my hair a year before Covid. I was going in for lengthy appointments for color and highlights every 6 weeks but really needed to go every 5. Most of my gray is right on top.
Now that my hair is salt and pepper, I’ve discovered that you can add more pepper. I go in for foils that exactly match the pepper about every 3 months or so - less time consuming and cheaper than before and I realize I did miss the salon.
Does anyone follow Goodbye Crop Top? She is all about empowering older women . . .wear the crop top, or don’t. https://www.goodbyecroptop.com/
Heck, I have Caps and Nationals shirts in the rotation!
My eyebrows are still thick and shrubby, with white in the arches. Definitely going to investigate the eyebrow tint. I’ve been plucking so I don’t have to go into a salon and take off the mask to wax (I get brows and lip done).
Absolutely guilty of wearing elastic (I’ve never had a waistline – lifetime apple shape here) and I wear baggy shirts to hide my middle. Have lost half of the weight I regained, but am still in plus sizes, so options are limited. The reality is that I don’t go many places where I need to look chic. Don’t wear much makeup, though mascara makes a BIG difference on me with sparse lashes. Haven’t worn earrings since Covid, as I have had them fly off my ears with masks.
I do color my hair, but it fades to reddish pretty quickly. Natural color is mousy brown with dull gray. Going to talk to my stylist friend who’s been doing my hair forever to see what she thinks. My hair is short and VERY thin. You can see my scalp in front and on the sides, esp if it grows out. Would love longer hair, but the bare spots are even more noticeable then. Two of my younger sibs have gone gray, so I have a good idea of how my hair would look if I quit coloring.
H’s shirts MUST have pockets. Period. Tshirts, polos, short-sleeve oxfords. ALWAYS tucked in. Wears LLBean jeans til they fall apart (so, yes, some of them are 15+ years old). He’s also a big guy, so won’t wear anything that’s not comfortable. Will only wear certain styles of shoes (and black only), and he buys that exact model and color forever. He describes his style as “rumpled.” If you remember the BBC show “Rumpole of the Bailey,” there you have it. But hey, when I met him, he wore quiana shirts and poly suits!
At least we’re frumpy together!
She is my favorite! Since losing 75 pounds in 2018, I’ve bought an entirely new wardrobe. About half based on her recommendations, the rest from Stitchfix which has really gotten me some of my favorite items ever.
I have seen many women go blonde from dark as they get older. Usually I don’t care for it much. BUT, I went out with a woman I hadn’t seen for a couple of years last night, and her hair was blonde and looked great. She had dark eyebrows, but her hair just went with her skin color. I have dark hair, and people have told me plenty of times that because of my skin and eye color I would look good as a blonde. I don’t think I can do it, but I am going to try something new, once I get through son’s wedding next month.
I’ll go blonde when my hair is totally white, right now when my roots grow out, it’s worth a try, why not.
Try washing with purple shampoo after you get your hair colored. It helps it not turn so red.
I love Jo Lynn Shane. Her outfits are always my style. I wish I could wear jeans to work though. I need to follow someone that does more business casual than casual.
I follow Jean Wang, on extrapetite.com. But I follow her 'cause she’s very petite, like me. Nevertheless, her outfits are great. I’ve learned a lot from her. She’s younger than we are – early to mid-30s. But very sophisticated, IMO.
Nice topic, I just like simple and generous clothing, primary color hair, not too much like too bright colors, simple and pure.
“Fashion mistakes” that make you look older.
As I’m into modelling and i do have some of the points that i really would like to share over here.
- complete black attire
- eyeglasses
- hair style
- matching accessories
- hair style
and there are many silly mistakes we does while doing makeup.
