D2 was giving me some brow lessons yesterday after I mentioned this thread and brows to her. She showed me a brow brush, a clean gel that keeps brushed brows in place and a light tinting for brows. I realize I have really short/small brows! I think they used to be longer.
I am absolutely makeup delinquent but her info make some sense.
Is brow tint something you can have done professionally?
I don’t have much makeup expertise and for decades have only used a few item (under eye concealer, powder to make my nose less shiny, and sometimes blush and eye shadow…. perhaps lipstick for a very fancy occasion). But I’m appreciate it the brow advise. Mine have gone grey and sparse, so in the past year I’ve been using an eyebrow pencil plus brush on brow color. But it’s not all that effective.
@FallGirl - I think the Benefit brow product would help with taming - but my issue was tinting and looking fuller. What I did was go into Ulta and talk to one of the make-up/skincare counselor-type people there and explained what I wanted and they pointed me in the right direction. That’s also how I ended up with a small jar of “Take the Day Off” cleansing balm by Clinque (creamy make-up remover). It works amazingly (especially for drier skin) and I’ve since seen it recommended in a variety of places…
I would imagine one of the folks at Sephora could also point you in the right direction for a good brow-taming product (it’s always busy though, so I’d try to go at a time when not tons of HS/college kids are there lol).
Colorado_mom - I’ve heard of some people getting their brows tinted professionally (also eyelashes - yikes!). I also tried an eybrow pencil for a while - the brow brush (like mascara) is 100X better (more natural). Brands make a difference though - I initially got an brow tint (little brush and tint) from CVS by Physician’s Formula - it came out in a big goop every time (although I like the brand generally). I tried out the Benefit brand at Ulta in a travel form (less commitment) and it’s so much better - very natural looking and it makes a major difference in my look (suprisingly!).
deb922 - I’d play around with brands. I also use a very light hand so it just gently tints the hair. It shouldn’t move that way (unlike mascara that always ends up all over for me, lol).
Sadly, for those of us with thick brows the formula isn’t strong enough to keep brows in place. I used to use mustache wax (teeny bit) when I was young and my eyebrows were like Brooke Shields. The wax now is far too thick. I wish someone would come out with a better product. I’ve tried quite a few.
Now that I’m older, I’m really glad I never plucked my brows just cleaned up the bottom line. Trying to tell my kids to do the same. One has really lovely thick brows.
I also do highlights for the same reason. I’ll consider letting more gray in but not quite yet.
I’ve been struggling a bit with makeup lately. I was going to a wedding and wanted to look nice so I started playing with makeup more. I wear no or fairly light makeup on a typical day and a little more when we go out. I realized a few things I do probably age me more than I thought and what I could get away with when I was younger wasn’t working anymore. I was also watching some videos and such online and tried copying their looks and decided that too much make-up just makes me look old.
Speaking of brows, mine are vanishing and grey. My mom, when she got really old had two tiny antenna sticking out of her forehead and I do NOT want to go there. So a couple of years ago I had my brows microbladed on. It faded after about 18 months so not terribly permanent. Funny aside, the lady that did it was on the first Carnival Cruise locked on for Covid. She never came back to the shop. I had an appointment for a refresh but never got it from her. Cost $500 as I recall (not reliable) but I HATED not having brows and trying to remember to pencil them in every day. And I wasn’t very good at it…
But the microblade treatment looked fairly natural and was the right color. Then I moved. Then I made an appointment for new eyebrows and was talked into a full tattoo instead of microblade. Said it would last longer. But A) they are WAY too dark B) they came out very square like you see on newscasts where they paste a triangle on their forehead. I don’t know if it was my tattoo lady or what since I asked for very very natural and not too dark (My hair is basically white now). After a year they are still too dark and still too square, but the few hairs I have coming out that are white are softening it some.
Long story short, I’d recommend microblading even if you have to have it redone once a year. Tattoo is too much.
Neither one really hurt to have done either .
But bottom like I’d rather have triangles than antenna soooooo ::shrugs::
Hmm… perhaps someday I’ll look into micro blading. My thing, greying eyebrows are a source of frustration. For now brush on products work ok, especially since I almost always have my glasses on and covering the eyebrows. (I’m also annoyed by the bags under my eyes, a hereditary thing I’ve always dealt with… just was hoping it would improve when I was retired and sleeping more.)
No, because the issue is some of them sticking out as I age. They were always shaped naturally so I never did anything. That might work. I’m so afraid to touch them.
I also had thick brows when young, not as dramatic as Brooke Shields but dramatic enough. I’m also glad I just cleaned up the bottoms. I recall once my MIL said something about my eyebrows and DH said something about her hair…haha.
They are still thick for women my age overall, however they are thinning out, especially the tail. I now use Anastasia BH eyebrow powder and it’s very nice. I never could imagine having to do that. Even if left alone, they still look fine, but I like them them fuller.
