Fashion Mistakes That Make You Look Older

What actually doing athletic activities, it does not seem that people in their 20s and people in their 50s (or 70s) dress all that differently.

Lots of guys wear shorts, at least when the weather is warm. Also, semi-fitted sweat pants seems to be common for both men and women.

To be clear, athleisure is not the same as workout clothing. It’s a crossover that works for other activities and can be “dressed up” for work or evenings out.

If you Google examples you’ll find cropped tankini type tops layered with a jacket. That’s indicative of what I was referring to, but I did specify it’s my personal opinion. To each his/her own and wear what makes you most comfortable and confident. Personally when I’m out and about I’m not baring my belly. (I do wear bikinis at the beach and pool.)

@Lizardly you should have challenged her to a showdown then and there or in the pool, so you could have kicked her you-know-what ! That’s awful!

You need to pay a visit to Lululemon or similar and try some mens athleisure bottoms - I think you can do better than baggy joggers!

Quite a legitimate question! I noticed a while ago that my already lighter colored eyebrows almost disappeared. I seriously thought that they just fell out leaving a few hairs still standing. Did not even dawned on me that they went almost completely grey because I still have only a few grey hairs on my head. The tint made the invisible brow hairs reappear and look like they used to look. So yes, for me it was all of the above.

Guess it depends on how you view it. If you are trying to conceal your age (often difficult to do), that may be deflating. But if you see it like the instructor sees it, that may be the opposite.

Anyone who uses the expression “a woman your age” is not a friend.

Then you’re lucky! No need to tint. If I don’t tint, I get a “salt & pepper” look to my eyebrows. Not super flattering

You could also try to fill in with a fine eyebrow pencil. Just light strokes, nothing too heavy. You don’t want to look angry

That comment says much more about the instructor than it does you. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Also, way to kick ass!

You beat me to this!!! Lol

I’d set up a poll if it could here but my guess is most of the females here (can’t speak for the males) would see the instructors comment as very condescending.

When I coached in a women’s running group, a lot of the women were over 50 so I made a point of letting them know I had started running at age 59 and I told them my age now. Some of them told me that was very motivating to them and I was happy to hear that.

OTOH a few years ago (pre pandemic) someone left some flyers on the counter of my office kitchen. A few of us picked them up and I saw they were for a pretty hard core cross fit class and said something like " not for me". A younger guy looked at me and said something to the effect of that being obvious! Now THAT was condescending!

I think it was condescending but I think the instructor thought it was complementary.

I veer between slapping my head and the poor girl had a moment where she didn’t convey well what she was thinking.

Exactly. Which is why I said the comment says more about her than the poster.

Lots of young and old men wear slim fit pants that are more flattering than dad pants and dad jeans. Which is what my husband wears. He doesn’t care and I’m not trying to change him.

I’m not familiar with that many brands but lululemon makes nice business casual pants. Bonobos also. That is what my fashionable nephew wears.

Speaking of men’s fashion. I can’t get behind the super tight, super short pants that some young men wear. My nieces fiancé is very fashionable but I’m not sure I’m a big fan of the look.

Regarding eyebrow tinting, my brows also started to look very thin and sparse. Hair was still there, but it had turned almost clear, it didn’t visibly look grey, though I have a few grey eyebrow hairs. Tinting them makes my brows look darker and thicker and really changes my face.

Athleisure for men- my husband has gone full athleisure since the pandemic. He has a lot of lululemon. His preferred pant lately is like a nice jogger. Some of them are linen type fabric, twill, or performance athletic fabric. They don’t look like sweats. I mock him mercilessly for his joggers, because it’s my right, but I will admit he’s a handsome man and doesn’t look like a slob.

I’m a teacher and I’m very up front about my age. People are usually surprised I’m in my 50s. Younger teachers will often say things like, “you look so great for a woman your age”… “you dress so cute for a woman your age.” They think it’s complimentary, but I agree, it’s kind of condescending.

My daughter’s fiancé loves his lululemon joggers. They look very nice on him.

I’m guessing most of us are reading both of the fashion (or not) threads going right now.

Trying to avoid fashion mistakes - or looking older - has (for me) nothing to do with fancy clothes or spending a lot of $$. I might venture to see that what it does take is a little thought.

I am SO not fancy. Now or nearly never have I worn a high heel. Besides my wedding dress and my brothers wedding in 1977 never have I worn a long “gown” - hope to never have to do that! I dread dressing up/fancy but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to look decent! I love shopping at a store like Athleta or Anthropology but I ADORE hitting a thrift shop and finding a great buy (my last one was a summery floral Boden skirt new with tags for $4.99! )

Be you. Let others be them.

Perhaps it’s regional or generational on if it’s appropriate or not to compliment a woman by mentioning her age? It’s considered a faux pas here.

“You look so great.“
“You dress so cute.”
With no mention of “for your age.”

But I agree with others that I would consider the intent if someone said something meaning it as a compliment, even if using a poor choice of words.
