<p>I'm moving in Sunday, and was hoping to get Internet access the first day. I run a few online websites so it's rather essential for me.</p>
<p>I'm in Unit 2 Davidson. Will I be able to pick-up a wireless network? </p>
<p>Any suggestions?</p>
<p>There are places downtown that have free wireless access. </p>
<p>I don't know whether you'll get it in the dorms, but there is also wireless available on campus -- AirBears -- which is accessible via VPN you log in to with your CalNet ID.</p>
<p>I'd also like to be able to get internet access as soon as possible (Unit 2 Cunningham Hall). So, you're not sure if we'll be able to connect to a wireless network from inside the dorm on the first day (and for free, I'm assuming?)? We should have wired internet access for free right away, though, correct? Can we purchase an Ethernet cable there to hook up wired right away?</p>
<p>I've never lived in the dorms, so I honestly don't have a clue about how internet works there. From what I've heard, though, it may take a couple days before your wired access is available.</p>
<p>AirBears is ALWAYS available. I'm just not sure it goes all the way to the Units, and I know one of the Units doesn't get it at all but I don't recall which. AirBears is free, comes with being a registered student. If you can't get it in the dorms, you definitely can get it when you get closer to campus.</p>
<p>you'll have to attend a calconnect session time, which i believe is scheduled through set appointments by floors of your building. for davidson, you'll be going down with i think the two floors of your RA to the Unit 2 Rec Room and computer center underground to watch an intro presentation thing and also sign up for your internet access, provided that you have your MAC address. i lived in davidson last year, and i did not get any free wireless in range to which i was able to use without passwords. the ones that usually showed up for me in davidson were rescomp (wireless hotspot on 5th floor), and random other places that i forget, all of which were password protected.</p>
<p>if internet access if a requirement for you, the closest thing i can think of is the free wireless up teh street at cafe strada. or, for that matter, airbears, for which you only need your SID and passphrase. airbears coverage does not extend down to the dorms...at least not to unit 2 davidson. i'd assume the same applies for cunningham as they are in generally the same location in unit 2.</p>
<p>Use a library computer in the meantime.</p>
<p>Does anyone know where the closest wifi hotspot is from Unit 1 (Putnam) or can someone link me to a good hotspot finder online?</p>
